Back in Nov of 2017 the VA authorized the issuance of a Veterans ID Card to all honorably discharged Vets. The response has been overwhelming and caused a back log of applicants. I applied back then and finally received the emailed authorization to complete the application on-line. These cards can be used as your proof of service to take advantage of the various discounts many retailers and businesses now offer Vets.
To start the application visit this website:
Veterans ID Card
You'll need to scan your drivers license (or take a pic of it and download it to your PC) so you can upload it on the site. You'll also need to have a good picture for the card.

If you don't have any type of military ID it would be well worth your time to apply and get one.
It's free and can be done all on-line. I understand one can visit a local VA to get a card too.

Good info.

Here in Alaska, when renewing your driver's license, if you take your DD214 of other proof of honorable discharge in, they will put a US flag symbol on your driver's license. I believe they charge $5 for it.

Other states may have a similar program. I see that California also does. Actually, all states, PR, and DC have the same program.

Looks like they're finally going to ship out the ID cards to those who've applied and were accepted. As far as I know theres no time limit to apply, just be prepared for a long wait.

I just got a notice from va.gov yesterday informing me that my status (on the card request) was changed to "SENT TO PRINTER" so hopefully I should see it in my mail box soon. smile

Thanks for the information fellas. I just applied and when I go to renew my Missouri Drivers License I'll be sure to take my official DD-214 with me so they can imprint the Veteran Designation on the license , too. Learned a lot today because of you guys posts, Thanks!

Just curious - isn't your Legion Membership Card (the new plastic one) as good as a Veteran's ID card?
You won't get one unless you can prove you're a Veteran by showing your Discharge Papers (and that means HONORABLY discharged).

Don't know how ya do it in the States, sorry.......... ohwell

Word is that Feds will be requiring a new and improved form of identification which you will need to get on an airplane or purchase ammo etc. like my state. So...we will soon have several options for drivers licenses here: one for undocumented people, another for joe citizen, a special one for people that want to fly etc etc (requires lots of proof to get) and for a fee you can have VETERAN on the last two. Bottom line, next year I will need a folder of ID proof to renew.

I believe you're talking about the "Real-ID" program the Feds have already implemented in most states. A few (such as Alaska) have an exemption that has been extended a few times, but will eventually be required. It's a special component of a Driver's License that has your life history imbedded in a chip on it (according to some conspiracy theorists) that can be read electronically. It's been a big point of contention with the State government here, as it would require replacement of all driver's licenses or ID cards and they don't want to cough up the $$ to do that. We already need a passport to travel thru Canada to get to the rest of the US, and TSA was going to require a RealID or passport to fly anywhere.
But you do live in California, where you need a license to breathe, it seems.
