I am at the point where I need to make some decisions on who I will be having do the bodywork and final paint on my '46. I hope to hear from a few of you to see very roughly speaking how much I should be expecting to spend on this. I read all the older paint posts and hope to get some opinions specific to my project based on the photos on my web page.

As you can see on my web page , the truck cab has been stripped to bare metal, cowl patch panels already installed and in primer, the doors have been stripped, reskinned and primed, the box is a brand new Mar-k box, the fenders and hood are all very solid metal and will need very little body work. The running boards are very solid but need a little work as it appears someone at some point probably ran them against the side of a barn, garage or tree. I plan on doing the interior parts (i.e. dash, upper panel, window trim, etc...) and inner fenders myself. As you can see I have already completed the frame. So basically, i would deliver the disassembled parts and get them back in final paint so I can re-assemble.

My thoughts are to go with an original single stage vs base/clear. Brewster green and black fenders just as in the "goal" photo towards the top of my web page.

I have spent a lot of time and six years to get it where it is now so what am I in for to finish it right. I've heard it will likely range from 4-6K but have recently seen posts where people are saying 10K which really scares me.

In addition if someone has recommendations for a place between Madison and Milwaukee, I am right in the middle of both cities. I have one guy in West bend, WI that seems like he does great work. He charges $35-40/hr + materials so I'm sure it will add up very fast. he has not quoted the entire project.

In the end, I want the truck to be as nice as it was when it was new....but I do plan on driving it (not trailering it). Not a daily driver but more of the Sunday rides and shows type of driver.

Here in Michigan $10K would be on the high side. 6K would be a very good paint job. $3K would be an economy job that might be OK for a driver. A good quality paint job is very labor intensive as a good paint job is in the preparation. Paint color will also determine price. Paint type and manufactor brand name also varies the price.

I have $4000 in my 53 paint job. Appx $1000 for the paint and $3000 to put it on. I had virtually no body work done on it though.

I need to sell my welding shop and move to the North East you guys are getting ripped.

here in central PA profesional paint job , entire vehicle ya lokin at 2 to 3 grand for a really nice 2 stage job ...

just keep in mind that you get what you pay for up to a point..If you want a show stopper job and joe will give it to you for a super cheap price grab your socks...Paint and material,s are costly plus labor at $75 to $100 per hr so if you want a good finish at a cost you can live with you will have to a lot of the labor ...doc

Just want to echo what 35 trucker said. It appears to me that in the Twin Cities (MN) area the 10K+ for show quality, 6K for very nice, and 3K for daily driver quality.

It appears that I am like you. That is, if you put all this work into the truck, might as well do a good job of paint. Paint quality is usually what people notice first.

anyone in new england that can media blast and prime too?

I paid a guy here in Two Rivers $3100 for my paint job in '04.
