Under the mud, It was covered with concrete. To him it was just a piece of scrap he'd picked up on a job somewhere, to me.....a sow's ear to be turned into a silk purse. After chipping the concrete off I found a 2" thick by 24" disc that appears to be a steel casting. It rings like steel, doesn't have that familiar thud that cast iron typically has. when hit with a hammer. The dang thing weighs 260# and I've been trying to think of some use for it. Well...I'm modifying and motorizing a 1/2" plate bead rollers that I made way back when I built my Pitts special biplane. So.....I think I'll use it for a base for the roller and I've had a chunk of 8" main line for natural gas standing in the corner for a couple of years that I guess I'll use for the column. Over Kill??? By a bunch for sure, but I might as well put these old scrap pieces to good use. That'll be one ell of a solid stand for that bead roller. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/166647667/large Denny Graham Sandwich, IL .

It's gonna be WAY more base than I need to steady up a bead roller but.....I've got it, so I may as well use it. Gonna be a SOB to move around and I like to keep my tools mobil whenever possible. Thought about investing in some good strong locking casters. When finished the whole rig with a full set of dies could weigh upwards of 450-500 pounds. Mostly cuz of the stand it's sitting on. dg

When I first saw the thing it had about 2" of rough concrete covering the whole thing, like it had been broken out of a slab. The more I chipped the better it started to look. No....it's not a flame cut piece of plate, cuz it's got a four or five inch hub about an inch tall cast into one side. I gotta do some more testing to see what it's made of, but a quick spark test and smack with a ball peen makes me think it cast steel, and it dents like steel also. I think it may have been a blank for a flywheel of some sort. Around the turn of the century Sandwich Manufacturing was a big player in the farm equipment business. They made the Sandwich hit 'n miss engines, hay and grain handling farm equipment, of which, the Sandwich engines were one of the best in the country. I suspect this could be something that was left over when they closed down the factories and somehow it got caught up in a concrete foundation or patio. My neighbor does demolition and that's how he found it. dg

And Don, I've learned a lot about old anvils from your passion for them. dg

I would use it to mount my fathers old 100 lbs anvil to, sure glad I was able to save it from him selling it for $20 like the other three he had.

My response to Mrs. Moparguy for that particular argument "It's not junk, it's precious metal". Don't say it out loud too often though.
