Well, I need a shifter for the 41 that I put a 700r4 in. I've been looking around and want to check with the voices of experience before pulling the trigger on this $300 purchase.
I thought a ratchet shifter would be good, given the limited space in these cabs.
Any of you guys use one? Like it? Pros? Cons?

"Automatic transmissions are smarter than all drivers, and most mechanics"! That's a quote from my father, who was the first man in Nashville Tennessee to work on automatics, back in the late 1940's. That's still true today. Any linkage that gets it into Drive, Reverse, and Park will get the job done- - - - -anything fancier is just something to play with. Rig up a plain old cable operated shifter from something like a Pinto, and cut the pockets out of your pants. The trans will shift just fine, and your plaything will be more fun than a stick shift!

Your right about the limited space in the cab. That is why I went with a column shifter for my 7004R. Much more comfortable when you have three people in the cab then when you have a floor shifter. But I went with a Ididit strg.. column , so I just ordered it with column shift. Has worked out very well.

Has anybody considered a dash-mounted shifter like the mid-1950's MOPAR cars had? My aunt's 55 Dodge comes to mind. It had a slot in the dash with about 4 or 5 selector positions available. Fabricating or adapting something like that to a stovebolt shouldn't be too difficult.

Well Jerry, after your suggestion about using something from a Pinto, I got to thinking....
I've got a lever than was in my 50 Willys truck that was used the activate the snow plow motor. It's a heavy duty lever with a heavy duty cable. It would probably work.
My concern it that I would inadvertently move it from D to P while travelling down the road!

I have used, and prefer, the Lokar Nostalgic floor shifter. Nice piece of kit.

I'd suggest making a guide slot that resembles a sawtooth pattern, where the shift handle has to deflect sideways a little to change positions. It's easy to fabricate from a piece of aluminum or stainless steel. If you really want to get creative, get out the stamping dies and label the positions. The old Chevy cast iron Powerglide had Reverse at the bottom of the quadrant, and no reverse lockout. (P-N-D-L-R) I've grabbed "R" a few times in a 55 passenger car when trying for "L"! That's a real attention-getter!
