I just bought an old Jeep CJ5 that someone in the past swapped in a sbc. I'm told it is a 283 but I can't be sure. So my question is what do I look for on this motor to confirm it is a 283 and also determine what year it was manufactured?

On the right front of the block just below the Cyl. head is a pad with stamped numbers.
Need those numbers.

Or better yet the casting number.

The casting number is located on the driver's side, top rear of the engine block. The number on the front passenger side of the engine block will NOT tell you the displacement of the engine block
