So, I have a GMC 1 ton dually. 4 speed tranny. I'm looking for a pto to go on said truck.
Are all pto units the same for that time frame ? If not how do I go about finding the correct one ? thanks, Charles

The 465 has some fins or webs cast on the case, the 420 is pretty smooth.

PTO should fit any of same model transmission it is removed from.

For interchange between models, if any, check PTO manufacturers literature.
PTO openings are pretty standard, same bolt patterns. But often need a different driven gear in the PTO for different transmissions, even though the PTO case may seem to bolt up.

Also be aware there are many different kinds of PTO’s for different uses.

If a '50's truck, a 420. Best to figure out first, submit a picture if not sure.

easiest way to differentiate between SM420 and SM465 is the 420 only has one PTO outlet (driver side) and 465 has it on both sides.

Later versions of the SM420 had two horizontal ribs cast into the passenger side of the case so, just because it has some ribs on it, does not mean it is not an SM420.

The link Grigg posted has lots of info on these transmissions and how to identify them.

The best place to find an SM420 with PTO is in the 4100 and larger trucks.
