Stopped at a garage sale a few weeks back and for $8 took home one of those little 8" swing (4" spindle to post), import drill presses. Thought it would be handy to have over on the shop side bench where I do my truck, tractor and lawn care equipment work. Reason it went for eight bucks was the motor is kaput. Just hums when you switch it on. I took a gamble that it had a bad capacitor but that's ok so the motor probably has a bad winding. So.....any ideas where I can find one of those small 1/3 hp 1750 rpm motors for those little import drill presses.....cheap???? I don't think these are really 1/3 hp motors cuz they're really quite small for that size motor. Been to Grainger YIKES, as usual, I could buy three new drill presses for what Grainger wants for a motor. Didn't find anything on Ebay either. If they can sell these complete presses for fifty or sixty bucks, you would think that you could find a motor for one on the cheap. And to top it off, the output shaft looks like it's some darn oddball metric size like 14 mm (.551 in.). That's not a problem, cuz I can bore the pulley or machine a sleeve It. Denny G

Is it a HF drill press? If so, give them a call and see if they can supply a replacement motor.

NG SS. All to big as I posted, this motor is very small for a 1/3 hp. That's why I believe the Chinese over-rate them by about two fold. 4 1/2" dia x 5 1/2" tall. I'd make a bracket up for a 1/3 hp wash machine motor if they weren't so big around. Also.....as posted....doesn't make good sense to put a $125 motor from McMaster or Grainger on an $8 drill press. Even new these little toys can be found for around $50. I think I saw a flyer from HF for one at $59 the other day. I wouldn't go out and buy one of these new for my shop, but for eight bucks I thought it might be handy on the end of the bench to just punch out a rivet or some other meager task when I didn't want to run to the other end of the barn. I have a large Buffalo floor model industrial DP and a good old trusty Craftsman floor model that has been in the family for more than a half a century, both....from when they used to make decent tools in this country.
I haven't bought a new electric motor in a lot of years. Angle iron, 1/4" plate, and a little creativity can go a long way to make whatever's handy fit. My Atlas floor model drill press has two motors with a 3:1 reduction ratio and a Sprag clutch on the low speed motor to keep from overspeeding it. It's got 24 speeds. My Sunnen hone has the same setup, and 8 speeds. I doubt if I've got more than $75.00 invested in modifying both machines.

No problem finding a “real” 1/3 hp motor, I’ve been collecting for some time. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/166598505 The problem is finding one small enough that I don’t have to butcher up the machine. See…I don’t like to have butchered up equipment in my shop. As you can see….it would take some real hacking away at the shroud to make a “real” 1/3 hp motor work on this drill press. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/166598503 This is why I’ve posted a couple of times….that I don’t see how they could rate this motor at 1/3 hp and that I’d like to find a source for these little off shore motors. dg
Looks like the same kind of motor used on things like dishwashers or clothes washers. You might cruise the local salvage yards or check with an appliance repair place for a junker that has a motor that still works.

Way smaller than those Kevin, actually about half the size of a wash machine motor. I've probably got a few of those laying around anyway, since I don't throw anything away. The whole reason I bothered to post this here is because in my 75 years I've not seen an AC motor that is this physical size. I thought out of the tens of thousands of 'Bolters, that one of you might have run into the same problem since these are very, very common. They very same model is sold by Summit, JEGS, DX Engineering, Walmart, Harbor Freight, CarParts, Amazon, all over Ebay, JB Tools, Sears, Northern Tool, JC Whitney, Lowes and on and on. Very Very common little toy drill press and I'm sure I'm not the first one to find a bad motor. The motor that's sitting on top of the cover is the typical size for a 1/3 hp. It would look pretty stupid to hang one that size off the back of this little tool. Well I guess I've about rung out as much information here that I can. Thanks for the comments. Have you tried contacting Harbor Freight to see if they sell parts for your unit? It might be worth an email to get some prices before you chuck your $8 toy. Good luck.
Got three local HF stores Sim. Asking next time I'm in one is definitely on the list. Although, I'm sure what they will say is, they can't order replacement parts for any of their tools. Even Sears, the last couple of decades can't supply many replacement parts, and at one time they went back 40 or 50 years. I know because many of the tools in my shop are rebuilt Craftsman that were decades old when I got them. But......not any more it's a throw away world and Sears is going the way of Montgomery Ward and so many others. tks dg
I've got the "Woodsy Owl" approach to equipment- - - - - -"WHOOOOOO- - - - - -CARES?" what it looks like, as long as it gets the job done? Of course, I once drove a Volkswagen beetle for 50K+ miles with flathead Ford V8 piston rings and Corvair wrist pins in it after J.C. Whitney refused to sell me a set of rings for my big-bore cylinder kit! 82 MM is 3 1/16" plus .040"- - - -which just happens to be a normal overbore for an 85 HP flathead V8. The bigger wrist pins were used to correct a little bit of a sloppy fit of the original pins in the big bore pistons.
Parts don't know, or care what they're used with, and getting the job done is far more important than having a personality trait that could be cured by a good dose of castor oil! Jerry

Don't cha Remember the motor connection box cover for my Bridgeport Mill??? I wouldn't run it till I found just the right cover to finish off the restore...then some guy down in Dellrose, TN sent me one he had around his shop. By the way, thanks again, now it looks right and I can sleep at night. And the grease for my engine lathe dead center.....that now uses the proper "White Lead" lube thanks to the same guy from TN. And......thanks again for that too.
I really don't "need" this toy....just thought it would come in handy at the end of the bench for small light duty jobs . If I can't make it look right, then I may just toss it on the scrap pile for the next load.
I made a living, fed my family, and paid for a hundred acres of Tennessee by making my tools and equipment get the job done- - - - -not sit there like museum pieces. We just have a very different idea of what's acceptable, and I'll wager I'm a lot more picky about the things that really count- - - -like getting fussy about half a thousandth on a rod bearing's oil clearance, etc. There's a difference in being practical about how something looks, and just being ridiculous! Denny, don't hold your breath but if I can get back to my father in laws before next year I may be able to help. George had a small drill set up that really sounds like what you need. I know it had a dang small motor on it. He used it mainly when he was building small airplanes as a hobby. Not sure when I can get back down there though. (Victoria back in hospital today)

My shop is such a mess right now, I need a leaf blower, rake, grain shovel, and a big magnet to get back to a workable state. Just wanted to let the group know, Mr. Hotrod Lincoln sent me a Christmas present.
