Trying to attach a new cable on my 51's 3 speed, the cable end won't go in to the "port." Hard to see but it looks like there may be a stub from the old cable in there.
The port has a hex section around the base. Can I unscrew the whole thing and take it out without any complications? Do I need to drain the tranny fluid first?

Standard 3-speed?

Isn't the speedometer gear near the top of the transmission?
If it is, fluid should not leak out when you remove the gear?

This looks complicated? It is easy on the 4-speed.

Yes, stock 3spd on a half- ton. Looks like the whole procedure is about full servicing of the rear bearing and speedo drive gear. l only need to remove the speedo DRIVEN gear. They remove it after taking the rest apart but don't say you can't only remove the driven gear before . That's what I'm asking. From the diagrams it seems plausible, so tomorrow I'm gonna give it a shot unless someone is sure that's a bad idea!

The driven gear will come out easy.

When I tried to install the speedometer cable on my '53 one ton I couldn't get it to go into the transmission. Turned out there was so much crud in the hole it blocked it. I took a piece of stiff wire and some PB Blaster and cleaned it out. Eventually it got cleared enough that the cable would go in, but it took about an hour of fussing.

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road.
