Long story short, I've tried 2 different fuel pumps including a new one from Napa. I finally got it running and took a short drive around the block. The motor sounded like it was loading up so I gave it some gas and it died. The only way I can get it running is to pour some gas in the carburetor.
When I installed the pump to get the fuel pumping, I had to eliminate the gasket to the stroke long enough to pump fuel. It doesn't feel like the cam lobe is worn down.
Could I have the wrong pumps?
Does anyone have a definitive part number?
Very frustrated....

In 1954 the same fuel pump was used on 235 & 261.
In 1958 the same fuel pump was used on 235 & 261, but it was different from 1954.

Don't think so. As Tim is trying to do for you, search Rockauto for your year motor. They have the definitive part number(s). What did you ask for at the pump store? Did the new pumps match the old one?
I hope you have the wrong pump so we don't have to go thru all this again. (not your fault). If you have the right pump, please search on here to read all the many posts on this subject. Pumps, carbs, filters, dirty gas, floating particles, gas cap vent, vacuum leak.............bad coil, bad condenser., loose wires, ignition switch intermittency.

As Tim said, same pump as a 235.
However, tonight the NAPA site changes it's mind every time I search 0145 and 0147. Sometimes says no for both, sometimes yes, sometime either/or. Soooooooooooo I am going by the fact that the Rockauto says 0147.
The Airtex 40217 checks out also.
