If a pipe-to-flare adapter fitting is used, I'll use paste-type pipe joint compound on occasion, but it the fitting is brass, it's usually better to install it dry, or maybe with a very sparing application of brush-on Permatex sealer like Super 300 to the pipe threads only. Galled threads is usually only an issue with stainless steel fasteners. Plain 'ol steel is usually OK dry, but a little lube won't hurt and like HRL said, brass doesn't need anything.
