I have some common rust and dents on my truck. Need your ideas on the best fix. I would like to stop the rust as best I can then fill the holes. Yes I would like new fenders and doors but its' not in the budget.

Would like to return truck to the original orange color and leave the top white. I will link to pics of the problems.

Rusty Rod has about covered it.
If your not experienced with body work get a book or find a friend who is. You can get body dollies and hammers pretty cheap. Take your time and try to get as much of a dent out as possible so you use as little filler as possible. And don't body fill over rust, remove it and add patch panels where needed. You will not be happy with the results (usually cracking)and only have to do it all over and have twice as much rust and rot.
A truck in progress and covered in primer is a piece of art.

Also let me add that you should use an etching primer or a sealer primer since a sanding primer will not seal out water if you are working on your truck and driving it. Nothing worse than working on an area all day, spraying it with a can of primer and seeing the orange stains of rust bleeding through a few days later.

Thanks for the ideas. I guess I will have to go the book route and this site for help. Any good threads I should check out on this site? Thanks for the reminder on the primer just the kind of information I need.

I dont' have any body tools and I don't know how to weld or cut body panels. Boy I hated to admit that!!!!

The Hood... I think if it were me I would be looking for a new one. That rust there looks like it rusted from the back side inner hood to the out side. I would think it would be really hard to cut that out and fix. I would scrap the hood if it is rusted in the front like that. Most of the ones I see that are rusted there usually has a lot of problems else where. I would look in the junk yard and see if you can find a better one.

The doors to me look like you could cut those spots out and wield some new patches in. I have seen others do it and I am a couple weeks away from it myself. Once you get it cut out I would clean it good ( + scuff) and spray some Zero Rust into the inside of the door. Oh. That place where the door opened up too far, I guess you know to make sure to fix the door stop to keep that from reoccurring. I took the door apart on a 1960 dump truck and used a short handled hammer to knock the door crease.

I think the photos of the rocker panel and cab panel look to me to have some rust under the paint. Those are spots that are prone to rust on these trucks. If you doing the entire truck you could media blast that and fix what needs.

Everyone has always said in most of the posts I have read to only repair the parts of the panel or patch that need it. Don’t fit the truck the to the repair panel. Only cut out what you need to and fit the patch to the area cut out.

Sorry for the long winded response… I hope that helps.
