58gmc 1/2ton truck gmc302 with Holley 4barrel carb. Need assistance from the pedal to the carb. The carb opens towards the grill. How can I get it to work?

If any of the throttle shaft arm hangs below the throttle shaft drill a hole UNDER the throttle shaft and this will reverse the direction of the pull. If nothing hangs down then tack or bolt something to the throttle arm that will hang down.

Is there a way I can use a cable set up? What would I need?

Cable is the only way to go and much better than the factory rods, bell crank, pivot pin Rube Golburg set up. We use Ford cables because it uses a small round hole in the firewall vs the square hole required for a GM and has a built in return spring. If your pocket book is strong then Lokar makes a very nice set up for just about any application. Pictures:

First shot shows cable through firewall at about the 11 oclock position above the brake booster.
Second shows blue integral return spring on the Ford cable

That's for a v8.I'm dealing with a 6cylinder.Does that matter. That gmc302 is a 6cylinder that came out of a deuce in half truck from the early 50's.

The function of an accelerator cable is connect the carburetor to the accelerator pedal---engine makes no difference.

I just went through this on my 53, used a 36" flex cable from Summit. Tried to jury rig a couple other ideas but the flex cable is great, smooth and no issues. I did use the 'spoon' type pedal, hard part was finding the best place to mount that. Best of luck

So I ordered the Lokar stuff that was recommended to me by a tech. Can I make the throttle cable push the carb linkage instead of pull?

My stock foot pedal to 1/2'' square tube, the bell crank [ mr. gasket product ] , to lokar 2' throttle cable. cable is double wrapped in asbestos
heat wrap and secured by double twisted wire @ tire well, to keep it away from the split headers.

the completely adjustable fittings on the plate is affixed to the engine using stock boss holes. the plate i designed holds the bell crank
pivot off the tube and allows the cable an even pull to open by pulling .... you can't push a chain ...... the throttle 4 barrel cabe.

The reason I went with the cable was to get away from the mechanical linkage. The way the carb sits now I would need to "push" it to work. Guess I might have to rotate the carb.

dtwbcs, Pull vs Push, that's the rub with this set up, as I mentioned tried a couple methods and nothing worked smoothly. So the solution was the Lokar cable from Summit along with the modern 'spoon' type pedal and it works like a dream, like a new car. Will try to send you a couple pics via pm. Also my carb is mounted cross ways (unlike a V8) puts the primaries inline with the motor/intake, so I needed the 36" cable to make the big loop and not kink.

Lokar stated it is a "pull" only set up. I'm good with that; so I need to rotate the carb; redo the fuel line

Rotating the carb 90 degrees is what most of my Inliner friends have recommended. I am really happy with this set up on my 53 flatbed. Best of luck
Also notice the pics of the 292 motor on this thread, that carb is also rotated vs facing forward.

So I bought both Lokar pedals : the Eliminator and a spoon pedal. I want to put one in my 58gmc truck with the cable setup. Anybody use either pedal? The Eliminator looks more like a standard pedal. PLUS in order to mount they would be close to the brake pedal?.
