Finding a replacement may be easy but how long will it last before you have problems with it. If you don't feel good about doing the work ask around and find someone who does and have them to it. New gears/bearings/seals and you'll be surprised how quite your truck just became!
Now if you find a used one on the "cheap" maybe do the swap while building yours.....and, the used one may have a different "ratio" than the one you have and are happy with? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 | Get a t5 5 speed you will really enjoy driving the truck then.Yes, it is a little more shifting, but the drop between the gears is less and the truck becomes so much more responsive it seems like a new truck. Look for Lugnutz on here, he can help with any questions you may have.You will also have a more modern transmission and overdrive if you use the highway.

They are full syncro units and can be identified by the 7 bolt side cover. You will need to do some modifications to the shift arms and change the front drive shaft yoke. They are good transmissions and seem to be more available and reasonably priced.

Purcellville VA Tommy suggested a T5 transmission. If you lean that direction, I have a very good friend who lives in Stephens City, VA. He has a T5 we installed in his 1966 1/2 ton. I'm sure he'd let you take a test drive to see what it can do. Let me know and I'll get you in contact with him.

I went with Hambone's suggestion and visited Leon's salvage in Culpeper, VA and got a Saginaw 3 sp. I agree the T5 would probably perform better, but I've got a 3 on the tree and want to try and keep it as close to original as possible. Anyway, it's still at the shop waiting install. Argh! Eager to try it out!
