Hello,

bought some "new" doors for me 46 gmc. they have been outside for years, all the paint is off, and they have surface rust all over. they are good solid doors with no holes, dents, etc. only the surface rust.

I've never started a repair on this type of rust.

What's the best way to proceed to get these to bare metal for a nice flat paint job?

thanks all for your help.

redbeard if you are sure it is only surface rust and nothing to bad I would have them acid dipped washed and primed ASAP, but if they have a little more than surface rust it will eat a hole in your doors! A good guy on a sand blaster could also clean them up real nice and not warp your doors.

Good luck

I had my doors dipped by the company that used to be called Redi-strip. They turned out really nice and they only removed rust and paint.

One thing that I found when removing the skins was that there was rust remaning inside the crimped areas. That is just a fact of life as there is no way of getting in there.

thanks for the tips, I will search for a stripper in my area, although I don't think there are any. LaCrosse WI area, anyone know of any?

any other ideas for a low budget project?

i was thinking a light sanding, then phosphoric acid treatment, then sand again, primer, sand again? will that work?

A cup brush on your grinder will work faster and better than sand paper. imho

I have been using a wire wheel in my power drill to remove rust alot lately. It seems to do a good job on the underside of the fenders and on the frame.
