For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 47 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 47 | I live in Prescott but would take the truck to phoenic or tucson if needed. I have checked here local and the prices are crazy 15-18 grand for a paint job. I asked about painting a harley tank 1 color black and got a price of 800 for a tank!!! My 62 is in very good shape no rust, it does have some dings but 15-18 ??? ( not to mention that is with me pulling engine, gutting the cab, pulling all trim, removing wood from box.
I am not looking for custom items. Solid color with the stake holes welded, welded fuel hole and that is about it, a few holes in the door from the mirrors.
I have had 3 shops no all tell me how straight the truck is and how rust free( they are amazed) but the least was 15 and the highest was 18.
But after talking with a few local that have rods they just said that no place close that is in the normal price range.
I am looking for a shop that some has used them selves with great results. If any one knows of one let me know. | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 204 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2004 Posts: 204 | HDWRENCH ...
I live in the Chandler area and I am going to have Gateway Autobody paint my truck. I have seen their work on a couple of other classic cars and they definitely stood out. The guy I spoke to was Cory and here is his contact info:
Gateway Auto Body & Paint LLC 16715 E Williams Field Rd Gilbert, AZ 85297 (480) 988-1860
If you talk to him let me know what you think!
There are several other shops in the Mesa Tempe area that I personally checked out and they were pricey and some didn't even want to make the time to talk to me. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 709 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2001 Posts: 709 | 15-18 THOUSAND??? or 15-18 HUNDRED?

i'm going to shoot it myself, probably use rustoleum from home depot. used it on a '73 i have. had to touch up the upper half of a two tone that had some light surface rust from paint deterioration from sun damage ( take that rust belters ). they even matched up a shade of baby blue. quart of paint: $10.
i was pricing out paint at a large paint store out in mesa, they're asking $500 a gallon for red? i'll pass.
i had a great experience with 'exclusive paint & body' out in tempe, (480) 968-4223. a neighbor's guest backed out of her driveway and into my '64 corvair so she paid.
she pretty much toasted the rear door ( i thought they'd have to replace ). plus i sprayed the corvair about five years ago with a metallic green that i'd had stored for around 20 years so i thought they'd have problems doing a color match.
dropped it off monday morning, they called wednesday saying it was done. i couldn't tell that it had ever been damaged, the fit and finish was perfect. door gap matches and it still closes with that solid 'thunk'.
good luck

That must be for a serious concours full-on paint job- ie remove every panel, strip both sides, ecthing prime, prime, seal, paint, color sand, paint, color sand, paint, color sand, clear, scuff, clear, scuff, buff, buff, buff, undercoat wheelwells, cab, etc... plus replacement fasteners, moldings etc...
That is a lot of work.
There must be some place that'll do less work for less money? Surely someone would scuff your existing paint, prime it and paint it for less than 15 - 18 K.
If not, maybe you can save some money by doing some of the work yourself?
Have you read the tech tips posted here on bodywork/paint?
I've heard from some body shop owners that they don't take on to may full re-paints because they can make lots more money doing insurance jobs. They say re-paints earn them less money somehow. I'm guessing they bill the labor on other work by the 'book' (standard time list) and mark up replacement parts. So, they may bill 3 hours for 1 hours work. With a repaint, 1 hour is 1 hour.
This may sound crazy, but have you thought about taking your truck to Mexico to get it painted? I know some folks who take their cars across the border for body work and paint, and they have been very happy with the work they've gotten out of Chihuahua and Cd. Juarez.

I mean I have seen custom trucks done for sale in the 25 range so the price is out there in left field with out a doubt.
I may try to find a place in phoenix that does custom pain work. I had planned on 8 thou for the complete job. I own a harley shop so my time is not at a huge amount to work on my own things. I am build my 350 now and am going to put in a 5 speed things that are mechanical are fine but I am not a body man . I think that is better left to guys that do that kind of work.
If I cannot get it painted I will finish with the engine and trans and dump it and buy one done. I will save myself money. LOL I think I will find a shop that can paint it though. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,445 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,445 | there is a guy in Douglas that does decent work, when he works anyway...

but when my finished product is just as good as someone who does it so-called professionally.....i'll just do it myself.
plus if i don't need the truck to drive i can take my time with it and just close the shop door on it when things aren't going right or i get sick of it
