easy solution to wrong speedometer gear issue..make your own speedometer display.

i used an iphone app to tell me my speed then made a mark corresponding to needle position on the speedo glass at 10k/h intervals. i then transferred those marks to a piece of tracing paper which i scanned, uploaded to my pc and then photoshoped before printing it out on a color printer (adjusting the scale until it was the correct diameter). even added a little chevy logo i got off the net. cut center hole out and then put it behind the glass in the original display. works a charm, and passed inspection

ps if you dont have a scanner you can just hold the tracing paper to the pc screen and copy the design using MS Paint through it

A brilliant solution. Looks good.

Ditto what cletis said.

Can't find the info but seems I remember a thread, or someone local, telling me a 68-72 speedo can be converted to an AD speedo with very little work and pretty much by doing the same thing you did......I'm still looking for that info.

Back before the days of speed monitor displays that tell you what your speed is as you drive by like this, I'd have a friend drive at a set speed then see what my speedo said. If he was driving 60 and my speedo said 55 I'd just keep in mind that my speedo reads 5 MPH slow. These days I can use the speed monitor to compare actual speed to displayed speed.

Drmike,
that speedometer face is stunning! So did it have to read in km/hr for the inspection?

I did a similar thing with my 1 Ton but kept the original look. My error was crested by a rearend change to 4:10 gears.

WOW,
Great idea. Now if this old dog just had an I-phone, scanner, printer, AND knew how to use them. The world now belongs to the young---thank God.

Virtually all GPS units display speed, and even in the 6 volt trucks a tiny 12 volt motorcycle battery will last for weeks between recharges if it only powers the GPS, cell phone charger, etc. A solar trickle charger will keep it powered up for practically forever. My Garmin lets me select between MPH and KPH with a simple programming change.

Jerry, your GPS will work fine on 6 volts I've been told. AFTER I bought & installed a 6-12v stepup so that I could run mine in the '38, a thread over on the VCCA site advised that they work just fine on 6v.

What a great idea! I'm facing the same problem now. Either way would solve my problem. Thanks to both of you.

hi,

yes,km/h plus inspection here requires a rolling road display accuracy verification at 40km/h so it was only really vital i got the 40km/h part of the display aligned correctly to the needle. unfortunately as the test is a rolling road test gps displays are not allowed so had no choice but to rig up something mechanical. if i ever change tyre sizes i can just print out a new display or rotate the current one a bit so at least the 40km/h is correctly indicated

nobody laughed at the fact my speedo goes up to 160km/h lol
