I've had my eye on a 1966 Chevy LCF tank truck parked at my former employer's yard for several years. Today I was told that I can have it if I want it. I don't think I can get a title for it. I can't park it at my house. I'm torn between stripping the engine, sheet metal and whatever else I can get, then scrapping or leaving the rest, or keeping it whole if I can find a safe place to store it. The truck was originally owned a major oil company according to the protecto plate. It would look great restored with their logo, but wouldn't be a great driver. It would also make a neat car hauler, maybe with a modern power train. I don't currently have the time, space or budget to do either. I could, however use the engine and many other parts for my 1964 stepside. I could then sell the LCF sheetmetal if there is any demand for those parts. I'm not trying to sell anything or even ask what its worth at this time. I'm just looking for advice from anyone who's dealt with a similar truck.

Question............do you have a place to scrap it out or is that a problem also? Those big tank trucks can be a real $ pit to restore. If the title is missing you would have to do a Oklahoma Title 42. Not a hard process but time consuming. You didn't say what condition the engine is in. Commercial trucks get a lot of abuse. Clutch and drivetrain are usually beat to death. All the sheet metal is reproduced so I don't know what the demand would be. Think long and hard about this one.

I would think that you really need to want this truck. They do get expensive to restore and is this a truck you would seek out if it wasn't being given to you?

Tires and brakes alone could eat up thousands of dollars before you could ever drive it. Ok if you really want this truck, but sounds like you are in the process of restoring another one.

If you had a place to stash it for a few years for free would be a little different.

I know tires and brakes on the bigger trucks are expensive. Heck, I had a hard enough time convincing my wife to let do the tires and brakes on my '64 stepside. I really wish i had an acreage, or at least a shop so I could stash it away. I could probably leave it where it is and pull parts as I need them. However, I just left that company to work for a competitor so I don't know if they'll let me come and go as I please! I need to do a little more research to make sure that nobody else might try to claim the thing. I have a relative with a shop that could take care of the Title 42. I do know the truck was driven to its current location a few years ago, but I never saw it running. Judging by the color of the engine, it has probably been replaced. Its a 292 but its black. I'm pretty sure they were green in '66. My stepside currently has a 194 with a cracked block so if this one isn't, it'd be an improvement, and its free. Deluxe heater, good glass, instrument cluster with factory air gauge. Probably worth more in parts anyway,

If the truck has decent Sheet Metal and is not a worn out piece of junk, it would be nice to see it restored.

If you don't have the time or money to restore it, you could always sell it and use that money to help on your current project.

I just hate to see another one gone.

I agree with you Bill. I like nice original trucks. I have to fight off my neighbor to keep him from taking a torch to my coil springs. If I had the room I'd like to hang on to it. Selling it could be a possibility, but I need to see if I can come up with a title. I may give it to a guy I know, minus some parts that I need. As far as my wife is concerned, I ultimately make my own decisions, but she has a voice in our household. I made $20,000 less this year than the last couple of years, so she wasn't thrilled with me buying a money pit, uh I mean project!

Why can't the owner just request a duplicate title, people loose them all the time?

Here we need a title just to scrap a vehicle. The only way around that is to take it to the scrap yard in little pieces...

I never knew that there in MD. For the right vehicle(s), I would buy them with no Title.

Back to the truck, I agree, pictures would be helpful.

I got the same truck and would be interested in some of the sheet metal if its in good shape.

Same here in IL.
Scrap yard won't take it with out paper work.
