The pre-computer days ended in the early 1980's so don't restrict your search to just old stovebolts. It might get me excommunicated for saying it here, but one of the most rugged, reliable pickups I ever owned was a late-1970's Dodge 1/2 ton with a 318 V8 and a Torqueflite transmission!

The 318's were a good reliable engine.
Too bad all pickups in the late 70's rusted out before the motor gave up.
The Chrysler slant six was indestructible also.
But and automatic Jerry?

A stick shift is something to play with- - - - -run an automatic trans and cut the pockets out of your pants- - - -more fun, and the vehicle runs better!

Vehicles with standard transmissions also need a hand crank for engine starting and an acetylene gas generator for the headlights! They're all the same degree of obsolete!

LOL!

Lots of bolters in Texas. You may want to check the Texas Connection forum....or watch for them to post.

Welcome Jim. I had a LL baseball coach named Jim Wooten in Greenwood, La....a long time ago. He lived across the street, and he took us all to practice in the back of his Apache truck. Believe his son was Jim also, any relation?

If you are looking for a Ford truck, you are on the wrong website. This site is dedicated to old Chevy and GMC trucks. While you are certainly welcome to poke around, you will not find many Ford truck info here as that is not our focus.

no nerve here! I have a mix of vehicles (as do a lot of guys on here). You just mentioned you were hoping to find a Ford twice in your post. I was just pointing out that this site would not be the best resource to finding one or getting help with one!

Hey Jim
Welcome to the Stovebolt! The guys here are really helpful and knowledgeable. Many of them readily share their years of experience. I learn something from these guys most everytime I crank up the site.

As an aside: Typing a message all in capitol letters is hard for most to read. Many across the land consider it an equivalent to shouting. Just a friendly bit of info, no offense intended.

I too have a problem with the new model vehicles. Just last week I stopped by a friends body shop. They were repairing an almost brand new Chevy 1/2 ton. It had more bells and whistles than a pimp mobile. The owner had minor front end damage, mostly a broken head lamp and grill. To repair that alone looked to be a nightmare! The thing has Grill louvers to automatically open and close to regulate engine temp., the headlamp has to be replaced as an entire unit. Both of these parts have their own "modules" to help operation with the onboard computer. I can't recall for certain the parts costs, but the total was around $750., just for the head lamp assembly. Oh, and the headlamp bulbs were extra! And guess what, the entire front bumper, and an array of other parts had to be removed just to get to the head lamp. The days of going to a friendly Parts supplier after dinner on Sunday and buying and installing a headlamp before the end of the 1st quarter of a football game are or will be gone soon.

I inspected a warranty claim on a late model Cadillac recently- - - - -a headlamp assembly replacement- - -parts and labor- - -was a little over $1400.00, and it's a chronic failure item due to the fact that Caddy in their infinite wisdom put the high voltage power supply that operates the light directly in front of the front wheel where it's constantly exposed to rain, salt spray, mud, etc. Smart!

Hey Jerry -- call it obsolete if you want, but my '01 F450 has the 6-speed manual in it. Left it running at the drug store earlier today while I did my shopping ... no one stole it.

Manual transmission is a good theft/car jacking deterrent these days smile

Plus I really enjoy the 13-speed in the "professional" truck smile

LOL!

How about an old Trashnational 18 & 21 speed with 3 shifters? But I think I'm getting off topic here.

Stewart -- hijacking threads is the official sport of Stovebolt.com .... wink Not really, but you'd think so.

Jerry, I drove a '62 B-61 with the twin sticks a couple of times. It was fun... Sortta...

On my old M-817, I figured out how to use the hi/lo on the transfer case as a split shifter. THAT got busy.
