Tried to get to the axle /hub seals today. Got tires off, axle shaft out, brake drum off, and stuck there. I don't have a 3.5" socket for the hub nuts. Tried somewhat gentle beating (is there such a thing?) With mallet and flat head driver to no avail.
Well at least everything is loosened up?
Did find inside of inside wheel had original paint under the grime.

I made a socket to get mine apart. Turned out they weren't very tight at all. Just snug.

Okaay. Made one? How?

There should be a locking tab folded down onto the outer nut someplace, maybe two... didn't see them mentioned in your post so thought I would mention them. Sometimes they blend in pretty good and if you're not looking for them might miss them, but they make a huge difference in being able to turn the nut off.

I found mine on ebay. Quicker than me making one. X2 on checking for the locking tab under the grease.

Found the best solution... Borrowed one from a friend. Locking ring only had tabs bent onto back nut, not front. Got passenger side off and have two new seals and hub gaskets ordered. However, went to try to get driver's side off, but axle flange bolt tapers(?) won't come loose. Even when hitting flange with sledge.
Too dang cold to try anything else right now -18‘C in the wind, or 0‘F for most..
I'm thinking penetrating oil or mild heat, any other suggestions?

I had the same issue on my fire engine rear axles. I ended up jambing two nuts together on the studs and backing the stud out with the tapered wedges.
