Mike, have you been reading the press releases?! This is big, high security with a fine timeline and minute window of opportunity to get in and get out. Heck, I don't even know the coordinates and I am supposed to be the second in command on this mission?? This hush hush covert operation has been in the works for a couple of months. No blasphemy intended, just not your typical rescue.

Huge success! Pretty cool to go rescue a truck that most likely would have melted back into the earth in a few more years. On to of that, fire it up for the first time in 15 years, hear the air brake compressor start to build air, wack the sticking left front wheel a couple time to free it, ease the clutch out and drive effortlessly onto the trailer.
Doesn't get much better than that.
This truck has a ginormous winch behind that cab with all kinds of levers and, it works perfectly. She's a beast!

I think we still need an Apache Wind Talker to decipher just what in the Sam Hill Don was talking about ...

This mission was like no other. Planned to precision, executed in style.

This truck was the first one I have ever rescued where the truck WANTED to be rescued. With all the elements needed to run, it fired right up. As Billy says a few whacks to free a sticky wheel, and I was driving! Did my first drive up on the trailer for my good buddy Pierce, and off we went!

Great day, got to spend the day with 3 of Stovebolt's finest and had 3 tons of fun!

Homecoming is in April usually and I am certain the torches and saws alls are being finely tuned as I type this. Instead of offering up this "Gay Mans Cruiser" to the ODSS peasant public so it can saved and cherished like every GMC should, the President of the Chevy Hoarders and Hackers club has already hinted that it will end up like the others. Whacked, hacked, wiped and swiped before our very eyes and all the while laughter will follow......

I would even entertain joining the trailer club if I could get my hands on this fine Giant Mountain Climber of a truck....

Talk is cheap, actions speak louder. Speaking of those "others," volunteers to to *preserve* have been sparse ... but

Maybe the ODSS needs an ugly pet. Maybe it can be a project truck. It can be fixed on and maybe even be used in some of these rescue/recovery missions. I'd be willing to contribute to making it usable. Might be fun.

I'm surprised at you all. Pierce was the only one that talked of cutting the truck up and he wasn't even there?! He was at home searching for enclosed trailers for his Blueberry Special and trying to figure out how he was going to explain buying one.
No one on the rescue mission talked about cutting it up I mean really, air brakes, a cool a$$ winch and it fired right up and drove on the trailer. This truck is in nicer shape than some of the "learning speimans" that we dissected in the past. Specimens that quite a few of you operated on too. Tisc tisc.....

Here is one of the videos I clipped from. I am still getting used to the camera and more specifically the GoPro software. There didn't seem to be way to use the sound that the camera recorded using there editing app. Also, as you will see, the filtering choices all seem to cloud the video.
Anyway here's what the truck sounded like after about 10 minutes of tinkering with it.

Every time one of these beautiful old symbols of days gone by, starts up after a long slumber with just a little coaxing still amazes me. Then to only get in and drive them. A true testament of a STOVEBOLT!!!!!

Speed record? I might be crazy, but not that crazy.

However, given the gearing, tires, and how well this truck runs without much TLC, this truck may not be such a slow slug. Given the fact the truck already has air, and the winch, ODSS recovery may have found its flagship.

Well, somebody needs to come give it a little TLC because it currently has the Stovebolt Flagship (Charlie) blockaded in port ...

It sure seems right to have a GMC as the ODSS flagship. Perhaps then GMC's won't be called the Gay Man Cruiser, but something a little more appropriate, like GIANT MOUNTAIN CLIMBER.

I submit the refurbished bed could be a mobile platform for the ODSS Men's *Glee Club!

Good question. How is Ol Buddy doing since his awakening from our rescue next to the pumphouse on our farm?

Sir Buddy has been a slow work in progress.

I acquired proper 6V battery cables that will be installed. Then an new battery and water pump since that was found to be leaking on his ride around the neighborhood a few months ago. After that I hope to get some help from our own ODSS Wheel Specialist for a new set of wheels and tires all the way around. Brakes, air tank then just drive it for fun.

Bone, your the retired one, how about helping a working man out and fixin them floor for me?

As my son would say, they aren't 26" and chrome! Just kidding. The rims are badly rusted, the rubber is shot. So I plan to get rims and tires exactly like it is. Even powder coated the same color to keep Buddy's original look and stance.

I have some that came off the bus if you think they would fit. Bus was 59 1-1/2 ton.

Would love to have the story of Buddy in the DITY Gallery. I'm guessing it'll be a neat "collective collaboration." What say you fellas? Shoot ... Billy could even make it into a movie. Well, maybe a series.

I thought I would kick off the weekend with a Buddy update:

Since installing proper battery cables so he can start and run as requested, we learned the water pump bearing was worn and leaked coolant faster than you could pour it in.

I removed the water pump (a little more challenging than a half ton) since the assembly for the compressor tensioner pulley is attached to a plate that is bolted over the water pump.

After much wrestling, the water pump was removed and sent to Mike at Marvelous Parts in Oregon and he turned it around in about 3 weeks.

Installed the water pump, all the other belts and hoses were also replaced.

Now Buddy runs and drives! Once we get some tires replaced, we can drive further than to the mailbox (1/2 mile away)!!!
