Then they start the balancing procedure. The items clamped onto the crankshaft are called "bobweights" which simulate the weight of the pistons and connecting rods so weight can be added to or removed from the crank counterweights, like balancing a wheel/tire assembly.

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | Looked like paint then balance rotating assembly, removing some weight from a few rods with a belt sander. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,805 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,805 | I usually static balance (weight match) all the moving parts such as rods, pistons, etc. (including wrist pins, rings and pin locks) to a tolerance of 1/10 gram before calculating the bob weights. A dollar bill weighs one gram.

If all the moving parts are matched, why wouldn't you just balance the crank without anything on it?
I love that home made intake. Not painting it shows the temp rings from welding. Do you think they just put regular old clear coat to get that shiny finish?
