So I'm definitely new to the older trucks. Have a 47 Loadmaster 2 Ton. The oil filter is the big canister style where you remove the lid and pull the filter out. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. I have a shop manual but it doesn't say anything about replacing this filter. Should I replace it on a regular basis like any other oil filter? I did see that I don't replace the air filter (oil bath). Just clean it and put it back. Thanks!

ljblue,

Welcome to Stovebolt.com.

You have come to the right place.
You have posted a clear question.

You have a bypass oil filter. A replacement filter cartridge is most likely available. I is not described/discussed in the Shop Manual because it was an option/accessory.

You should replace that filter every time you do an oil change, every 3,000 miles is the GM recommendation.

Go to the "Tech Tips" link near the top of this page. Then go to "Engines". Scroll down to "Oil Filters", and you will find this information. You might be able to ID your filter, if it is an AC filter (many companies made add-on oil filters).

If you have a GM/Chevrolet AC filter, you might find a link to a photo here.

Tim is right on with his information. One thing is remember not to throw the old one away so you can use it as a reference.

...I have a by pass filter which I replaced an old Atlas 60 filter with todays Fram C4P. This is just to give you somewhat of and example of what numbers you may find.....and speaking of numbers, have you cleaned off your old filter good? Sometimes I've seen a number stamped on/in the filter but you can't see it for the grime ......just some thoughts.

Awesome. Thank you guys. I'm new to the forum so the guidance on where stuff is kept is helpful. I'll check out the tech tips section. I'll also check my filter and see if I can find any numbers. Thanks again!

Invest in a high tech tool that's available at Walmart- - - -a turkey baster! The canister will have about half a quart of nasty oil in it that doesn't drain back into the oil pan because the exit orfice is a few inches off the bottom of the canister. Unless your filter housing has a drain plug (some do) it's a hassle to get it completely empty. The squeeze bulb baster makes it a lot less messy than soaking up the excess with rags.

Hey great tip Jerry. Thanks for that. Just following up. I pulled the filter and it has a fram c21 in it now. Looks like that's hard to find but I do see a wix filter replacement. Will grab one and get it an oil change. I'm sure it's been a while. BY the way, got her fired up tonight. Just let it run for 5 minutes or so. Oil looks good in it but I want to change before i go to far. Wouldn't idle without being choked. I'm sure the carb needs a good cleaning and some gaskets replaced. Little fuel leakin out of the bottom of the carb.

Sounds like you've got it well in hand. Get that oil changed and clean up the

carb then drive

Alemite still makes a suction pump for draining filter housings.

I have a couple of them that are 60 years old, but they still make them.

Siphon Pump - might have been discontinued, but this more expensive hand-pump would work

I use my Sludge Siphon.

While you are at it, stamp the WX number neatly on the outside of the housing so you will not have to look it up every time.

I recently acquired a (I think) 42' 1 1/2 ton Dump Truck.
Vin: 2MS0420216
Engine: BFC42I858
Trans: 736944

Got it home. Rebuilt the Rotenchestor, flushed radiator, replaced thermostat, oiled her up (she leaks from every orifice) then took her on a victory cruise.
Then the inevitable occurred, multiple tire failures.
Now looking for used 20" in Central California. They want more for one tire than I paid for the truck.

Second issue is the oil leakage. My girlfriend calls it the Exxon Valdez. I am assuming that this particular
engine is a 216? And parts are available? What I cant seem to iron out is the transmission. Its #736944 left side PTO with output yoke dia. of 1.750 and PTO shaft of .750 oil pours out as fast as I pour it in. Any help in either direction would be most appreciated.

OH! buy the way there is this cool square hatch cut out
of roof on passenger side for what? A guy with a machine gun ?
Thanks Derek

Derek, welcome to the Bolt!
In order for your question to get the attention it deserves, you need to start your own thread, rather than just adding to this one, because everyone might not see it here.
Hope that helps. Good luck!
