Did a search on this topic and found a lot of info but couldn't find an answer to my question.
I have a 51 3100 and a 53 side mount spare carrier. I have a dimpled fender. Trying to fit it up to my new bed and can see that the carrier has to go all the way up so the angled flange of the carrier meets the angled bedside. It would seem that I also have to mount it directly against the stake pocket also as it comes pretty close to a fender mounting hole. Also I understand the bottom two holes in the carrier take the reinforcement bar. Does that bar stay on the outside or the inside of the bed?
Is the carrier supposed to be as flush up against the stake pocket as I can get it? This would mount the left side of the carrier directly on the pocket flange? :confused:

'51's didn't come with a side mount. Spare went under the bed. You shouldn't have the dimpled fender, so its hard to say what your looking at. The person who had it before you made some changes that weren't stock. Hopefully someone on the forum has gone thru what your doing and will have an answer for you. Cecil........

Actually, I am doing this to my 51. I know they weren't stock on my year. I guess I'm looking for someone with a 53 and a side mount spare. Same Bed, Same Fenders. And I'll ask another question or two. Does anyone have a copy of this RPO Drawing for 1953? I have 54 and 55 but they were different beds. I'm interested in seeing if it was a different mount for 6.00 and 6.50 tires.

I mounted my spare under the rear w/ a cable crank down set-up out of a new chevy truck. as well as a new under the bed tank, which was stock for 48

Yeah Jim. I have a stellar under bed spare carrier but I moved the gas tank out of the cab and have a custom stainless tank mounted on the back end so there goes the stock mount. I like the look of the side mount so it should be no big deal to make it look like a 53 with the RPO. Just don't want to drill into a new bed without knowing.

Caroline really wanted the side mount, but I told her if she ever had to change a tire the mounting woould be fairly high up and lifting that much weight would not be good on her back. We don't have a dimpled fender so the tire would be high.
SHE still wants the side mount..........
My universal tank is under the pass side w/ the filler just in front of the rear tire fender. I used the old filler and rotated it 180 degrees and mocked it to a 2'' tube. holds 16 gal.
let me or keep us all informed as to the side tire mounts, cause I have a feeling I'll need them.
