I am currently repairing two leaking wheel cylinders at the back right wheel on my 58 2 ton

Viking. I was able to purchase the wheel cylinders,

however Napa doesn't have a listing for the brake

shoes. Its a shame too, the brake shoes look new,

unfortunately they took a bath in brake fluid. Drums

look new too, barely a lip on the outer edge! Does any

one know the part numbers for the shoes ? Also, the

springs and rest of the hardware look great. I have

always replaced the hardware when replacing brake

shoes. Is their a part number for a kit? I have read

here that the drums need to be pretty snug in order

to bleed correctly. After bleeding has anyone gone

back and backed off the shoes a bit or is the heavy

drag typical in the adjustment of our two tons ?

Hy viking58, please refer to your trucks series rather than the term "2 ton", is your truck a 40, 50, or 60 series. In this particular case the parts are the same according to my catalogue, but there may be times when the parts you seek are different between the series. You can also identify your truck through the serial number. The Raybestos p/n for the brake shoes is 108PG, I did try to cross that number at Napa but it wouldn't cross there. If your return springs are eight identical ones then the Raybestos p/n is H509 for the return spring set, hope that helps.

Also, you need to read the manual as far as bleeding. One of the rear shoes must be loosened all the way when bleeding or it traps air in the wheel cylinder. I made a pressure bleeder from a garden weed sprayer, it works great and makes the job a lot easier!

My truck is a 60 series, 6500 model. I checked the brake part number, no luck. I am currently looking for a service manual.

I have read quite a few posts about brake bleeding. Two items about my truck that seem to be different than others are,

their is only one bleeder screw on my hydrovac, and each of my wheels has two wheel cylinders. I don't think this would change

the sequence of bleeding. Is this a heavy duty brake system or is two wheel cylinders typical? Thanks for the schooling,

greatly appreciated.

When I went through the brakes on Thor (58) and Magic Bus (59), I was unable to find new shoes. That was several years ago.

I got them redone at a shop in Richmond, VA. Great work at a great price. You may end up finding a local shop that does that work. If you want my contact, I'll look it up and get it to you.

Hy Viking58, RockAuto has Raybestos p/n 108PG $76.79 for an axle set. Do your rear brakes use eight identical barrel shaped return springs? Two wheel cylinders on the rear brakes is standard on trucks larger than a 30 series (one ton)

I tried to buy the brake shoes on Rock Auto, they are currently not available. Starting to look like I'll have to get them

relined. If I cant find some one local I'll get that info from you. Yes, the four springs per wheel are identical. The spring

body is approximately "1 3/4 and total length about "3 1/2. They attach to a tab bent from the shoe body. The front has duel

cylinders one at 12 o'clock and one at six. With both having bleeder screws, bleeding the top one first seems to make the most

sense. (I really need to find a service manual).

Upon further inspection I found the other bleeder screw up on top of my Hydrovac. I swear it wasn't there last night when I was

trying to bleed the brakes in the dark. Unfortunately I also noticed the driver side rear cylinders are now leaking.

Viking58, visit a large trucking company, or small, and find out who is relining their brakes. I delivered a driveshaft to a place in Greenville, S.C. a few months ago and they told me that while they use mostly new shoes they do get some relined. They gave me the name and I wrote it down but my age is showing and I can't remember.....Someone around Penn. surely can help with this.
