side mirrors - need to make rubber gasket/grommets

Hiya folks.

I have these mirrors here:

The painted white ones on the right side(the shiny ones are fomoco)... for my '65 chevy truck.

----

So, I want to mount up my side mirrors, but I bought these mirrors used, as they are '64-'66 vintage OEM chevy parts... so no rubber gaskets to fit between the mounting arms and the body of the door.

I am looking basically for a printer paper sized sheet of rubber to cut my own gaskets(for lack of a better term). When I was a kid this was a common thing... I found the cork and paper(for using with fuel systems) gaskets, but so far no joy on the rubber.

I went around to some parts stores today and the parts people looked at me and said: yeah, that seems like something you could get in a parts store, but I don't know of anything we have.

I'm thinking maybe they have it, or they can get it, they just do not know exactly what to call it.

So, if anyone has any information they can share.. parts numbers, names of brands, name of product, whatever, I'd appreciate it.

I'm also going to try the local hardware store, we have a pretty good one, maybe they have something I can use.

Thanks,

-W

the last ones i used, found a tire patch the size needed, took the back off stuck it to the mirror, then trimed of extra, worked fine, use the sheet type to mount other things to firewall, check the local tire repair shop for the flat patches..mike

Woogeroo,

If you send me your mailing address, I would be pleased to send you some pretty thick, used, rubber sheet. Let me know the approximate size of each gasket, so I can cut the sheet to fit a standard envelope.

I tell ya what works good.. a pair of cheap rubber slicker "over boots".

They're designed to slip over your shoes.. real good thick rubber that cuts nicely with a pair of tin snips.. most folks have an old pair laying around.. or you can pick up a new pair for under $10 at WalMart or KMart.

I've used 'em for mirror arm gaskets, for gas tank filler neck gaskets on both my '46's, for rubber to put under the bed blocks of my 1/2 ton '46.. even cut one for use as a piston ring in an old air compressor... and I still have a boot and a half left!

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

Or for about three bucks you could buy a bicycle inner tube...
