A guy on craigslist has a Dana rear axle from an 84 1-ton. I asked for the distance between spring perches and he said it's 40", center to center, which is what I measured on my '57 axle. Does anyone know if there's any reason that this axle won't fit under a '57? He's a couple hours away so I'd like to know if it'll work before making the trip. Thanks for any advice.

Jeff

Chances are good the axle is wider where the wheels mount than what you have, making for a wider stance.
If you've checked that and it's not a problem, or you're not worried about that anyhow then it will fit or can be made to fit.
If by chance one of you measured wrong and the spring pad center distance is not the same it's not the end of the world if you have to relocate them.

Have you researched and shopped for a GM 14 bolt rear axle? In my opinion they make a great swap for a 1 ton axle, cheap, easy to work on and get parts, and good selection of gear ratios.

What models and years of trucks would have the 14 bolt rear?

I pulled one out of a 93 Suburban, it was 67.5 wide but I have a single rear wheel 1-ton flatbed so the slightly wider stance is fine. I have found 63.5 under a 73 chevy C30 flatbed.

They are pretty easy to spot on the road to get a good idea of what they came in, look like someone took a bite from the bottom right corner.
