I have a six cylinder in my 61 apache. ware/ how can I find out what motor came in the truck. the numbers on the motor are 54-57.so its a transplant. im woundering if it was an 8 or 6.

From 55-2 through 1959 the letter "V" was added as a prefix to the chassis serial number to indicate the truck was supplied with a V8 engine. I don't believe later truck serial numbers identified what engine was supplied.

Also, I've never heard of any Chevrolet truck having the last four didgits of the engine serial numbers match chassis serial numbers...when did that happen???

The only way I think you can find out if a 6 or V8 came in your truck is take the VIN to a dealership parts dept and see if they can run it for you or contact GM archives and see if they can pull a build sheet.
