Hiyas folks.

I was taking apart my filler neck, so that I could remove and replace my gas tank filler hose, as it had cracked and was leaking.

After getting all of that apart, I noticed my filler neck, where the cap screws on, is in fact plastic.

Now, my truck is a basic, base model without all of the chrome trim and things, so I was wondering if this was a thing with the base models or maybe if this was a replacement part over the last 50 years?

All of the other ones I've seen at car shows over the years looked to be metal... and until I held this one in my hand, I thought it was too.

Anyway, I was just curious... I have new parts on the way, including a metal neck.

You know I have one of those too off a parts truck, just can't remember which one.

All three of my '66 trucks had the plastic part. GM may have started using them around 1965.

I was curious about it, I will have to keep an eye out at for other trucks like mine the next time I'm at the car shows.

The plastic had started to flake, so that is the main reason I decided to replace it. I put it on the shelf in case I need it sometime.

This is good to know, my '64 chevy filler neck is plastic and although I was also surprised, I just assumed they all were. I didn't know I could get a metal replacement.
