Hiya folks.

I was toying around today with my dad's old '53 3100 yesterday... and the steel brake that goes to the rear axle burst.

egads!

Luckily I was stopped when it happened... 5 minutes earlier and it would have been an interesting ride with the park brake.

Time to swap out the metal lines then... I've swapped out and bent straight ones from the store before, but I noticed some of the vendors have all the pieces in a kit, but I imagine unless specifically written, they are all straight lines that need to be bent as well.

Anyway, just looking for suggestions for steel brake line sourcing, pros and cons.

Thanks.

Inline tube as well, but ordered mine stainless pre bent. Exact as originals and fit perfect.

I realize you are asking about steel lines but wanted to add info about the stainless lines in case you consider them. I went the same route as above, pre-bent stainless. Looks very nice but if I did it again I would go with steel. The fittings on the stainless were very hard to seal. Had to repeatedly loosen and tighten them but after doing that 2-3 times they are now fine. There may be a different bevel on the stainless fittins.

The stainless steel lines are not as soft as steel lines, requiring the progressive form-fitting of multiple tightening-loosening-tightening routine mentioned by Chuck above.
After you do this to one or two fittings, you will get a feel for it and it is easy to do. BTW, I do this same procedure with steel lines to make sure that I don't have any leaks.
The pre-bent stainless lines from Inline are as close to exact fit as you can get, and you will never have to worry about your brake lines ever again.

I just put all new lines on my 38 Master. I used the new copper nickel lines and I found them much better to work with. I bought lengths and cut most to size so I flared at least one end on each. I don't think they can rust so are my choice for sure.
