I have a 1951 chevy 3100 and need to put a tilt column in it and was wondering if anyone has done that on a advanced design model chevy. I have a column from I did it and it is 31 inches long. I am not sure how to connect it to the factory gear box. Do you just cut the factory column to the right link and put a u joint from the double d to the factory shaft. Just cut the shaft above the box long enough for whatever U-joint, plus a little, you are going to use.
You will need to make a strong support for the front end of the new column, since it is no longer supported by the box.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Carl I'm sorry, that's false and misleading. There's no problem with using tilt with manual steering. EdPruss has you on the right track. If the column is well supported at the dash and firewall (and you may want a better brace between the dash and firewall as well), you'll be good to go with following his instructions. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,191 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,191 | I would bet most of you're driving will be with the column in the straight position, not tilted, so the loads will be about what any column would see. Now if you plan to drive with it tilted to the extremes, I can see to much force being applied.

I would like to add that anyone attempting to do this modification needs to be certain that they know what they are doing for the sake of safety for the rest of us sharing the road.

I double "DD" the shaft 3" above the box and did the same to the steering shaft. the steering shaft was hollow, 1" ID. Slid it over the shaft, drilled a small hole through it and used a small hard bolt to hold them together. Works great for 2 yrs. now. getting ready to put electric steering using the same 94 suburban column that I grafted a 05 Ion electric pump. Should be interesting. | | |
