Does anyone know the PPG paint code for the "Champaign" interior color for AD trucks?

At this point, there is none. All seem to be lost. A couple of the big vendors (Chevy Duty, Jim Carter) sell an enamel that is supposed to be a very good match. If somebody had some we could scan and have matched, we'd have it, but until then, a guess is as good as it gets. Maybe if enough of us ask they will formulate in modern formulas too. I'd give who knows what to get a PPG single stage to use. I'm not holding out for perfect either.

I think a current Audi color (Dakar Beige???) is close. I may have some mixed to see for sure. I've bought all the rattle cans of colors that seem comparable, but current colors haven't shown any good matches.

Anybody else with thoughts on this one?

The 47-53 Chev truck interiors were gray-brown metallic, not champaign. I
put some of my database below. I sell the complete paint info pack for $20.
I don't have DAR, but your paint store should be able to convert. I'm
changing all my lacquer numbers to DCC Concept acrylic urethane, a better
binder. I'll put my sales pitch below, too.

I hope this helps anyone else who may have the same question I did.

Pakrat47: I was searching the web site and came across this old posted exchange. I have to ask did you paint your truck with the codes above and were they the correct interior colors? I've seen many colors used but Mr. Adler was correct about the gray-brown metalic color being in my old 51 firetruck. I just want to match it up with the right color.

VA., I went with PPG DIU3550. It's actually listed as a 1983-84 GM color "Lt. Briar Brown Poly". I think it's an excellent match to original.

I need to get myself a dig. camera so I can post some pictures of this kind of stuff. :rolleyes:

BTW, DIU is just DBU basecoat that you don't clearcoat.

Yep...you need a digital camera. I want to see it in color. If you weren't so far away, I'd drive over to visit with you.

Well I'm tryin to follow this but your loosing me with all the acronyms. What's a DIU or a DBU?
I was gonna send Bob Adler $20, but if that is the kind of mumbo jumbo that he is gonna send me, I'm not wastin the money. I understand these are paint numbers but other than the ones prefixed with DuP, and PPG I'm in the dark.

Which is it, a 27626 (Unkbown Manufactuer?) or is it DuP 8540?
What’s a DCL 3613 or a DCC5558, is that a Dupont number?

And then in the end we end up with PPG DIU3550 which,was not sugested by Bob A., J.C. or Chevy Duty?

Maybe I'll get this jargon after I have been around a little longer, but can ya help me out here and now?

Denny,
They are just the different types of paint from the supplier. DCC and DCL are PPG paints. DCC is Concept single stage urethane and I believe DCL is laquer. Me thinks Adler only supplies the numbers for Dupont and PPG paints, but a jobber shoould be able to cross reference in any brand. I've been getting my PPG from a place in Orland Park, but that's probably a little far for you. Sure is expensive though.

Thanks Bob, I probably need to stop by the PPG dealer here (closest is in Aurora) and pick up some literature so I know what the different lines of paint have to offer. My body shop buddy, (doesn't everyone have one of those) only uses PPG and he is always bending my ear about the high cost of their paint now days.
I won’t be ready for paint till, I’m hoping, next summer. But I like to stay ahead of the game, so I’m starting “Paint 101” now. I painted my Pitts Special Biplane and a bunch of vintage motorcycles way back when, but I haven’t done any spraying for quite some. Dulux, Centari , Imeron were some of the paint lines that were around back then, a lot has changed since then.

Denny, The only paint line I have had any real experience with is PPG. The letters I listed are actually PPG paint prefixes and not acronyms.

PPG prefixes are as follows...
DAR-single stage acrylic enamel
DAU-single stage acrylic urethane
DBU-universal basecoat
DCC-Concept acrylic urethane
PPG also has a line of less expensive products called OMNI. I have used these products with very good results. Here is a link to PPG's website. Hope this helps.

I've book marked the PPG site and will be devoting some study time to it. I'm learnin', slowly but surely. Maybe by the time I’m ready to start on the cosmetics I’ll have a handle on it. My body shop buddy has been giving up a little information on paints and painting systems from PPG, but I have to pry every little bit of it out of him. You know how a lot of people are reluctant to let you know their SECRETS!
