I have a 49 chevy 3100 that came with the original 216 with 3 speed on the column. Since then I have dropped in a 235 with short water pump but used the bell housing off of the 216 and the 3 speed. The 235 came with a 3 speed that bolted to a cross member and will not bolt up to this bell housing. I was told the guts are the same... Now my issue is I have lost 3 gear. Can anyone tell me what my options are using what I have along with the enclosed drive shaft and stock rear end?

Is the three speed transmission for/from an open driveshaft or enclosed driveshaft rear end?

I finally figured out that the tranny that came with the 235 was from a 1954 chevy 210 car so its likely that the 235 came from that also.

I guess what I really need to know is which transmissions can I use that will bolt up to my original 216 bell housing with my original enclosed drive shaft. I'm pretty sure the truck came with a Muncie 3 speed is that correct? If so that is what I have now... not having a lot of luck tracking this information down via google or the search option.

It will bolt up to your bellhousing but it will not work with a closed driveline.

OK how about this one

Also are these holes in the cross member for the holes in the tranny at the end where it connects to the drive shaft? One hole has road grime in it

The tranny from the 51 will work.

If I am correct, the 51 truck tranny won't have any place to mount it to a cross member, the bell housing is the rear mount for it. A tranny with a mounting boss on the tailshaft is for a car.
