Thinking about throwing some extra tools in the truck, to be better prepared this year. None of us can have all the tools, but together, we can.
If I really get working, a set of trailer axles that need to be straightened and aligned. That could also be a clinic on shaft straightening.

Bottle opener has been added to the list.
But, you don't need one to open a mason jar.

Don -- Bring those bent trailer axles and we can run (literally) next door to Lloyd's (our fabricator/welder) Friday morning. I can check with him beforehand if you like.

I have an ongoing project that may need an assist and some tools. Trying to extract leaf spring pins (about 3 inches long, 1 inch diameter) that appear to be in pretty tight. Method in my book (using a slide hammer from the grease fitting side) is not working and hammering from the inside of the frame has not broken the pins free. If anyone has some ideas or special tool tricks, I suspect I will be in need of help.

Did you get the wedge bolt out?

Did you heat the hanger bracket with a propane torch for about 30-45 seconds. Then try driving the bushing out.

What size is your hammer?

I'm available this week (days or evenings) if you want help, call me...

Wedge bolts came out without too many bad words. Pb blaster over the course of the weekend and many attempts with big hammer on pins. Borrowed air chisel for back shackle but did not tty that yet. Access is not great on the front hangers. Was afraid to heat and melt the bushing. Could use some advice and/or help if you are in the wildewood area this week.which night is best for you?

Thanks Mike B. 6 pins extracted. Galled wicked bad. R&S spring works in Bladensburg MD is taking good care of me. Many new bits and pieces going back on - all in stock.
Mike B promises the installation of springs, shackles, pins and u bolts will be a breeze so I have that to look forward to.

Looks like I will not bring the axles. The trailer is being put into service for another project.
But we can have a discussion on how to straighten axles with heat.

I have an engine leveling-lifting-thingamajig I can bring if needed.

I've got John's engine holder thing that I am bringing back.

I'll check with my neighbor this evening to see if a crane could be fabbed in time. I have a chain hoist that would work good.

I've used a come-along and the roof truss on a few occasions.
If needed we have plenty of slings and other rigging, just let me know.

Come-along on a roof truss??? There will be many things happening in my pole barn Homecoming weekend. THAT, however, will not be one of them.

Note for the record: I *did* have a propane torch last year. It didn't have any fuel, but I did have one. It will have fuel this year. And, I plan on getting a real heat gun (Peggy wants her hair dryer back )

I think I will still look at them tomorrow to see if they are worth it.
Another thing I'll have, is a first aid kit in the truck and plenty of aspirin.

Will we need a 1 ton chain fall or short chains to hook onto the blocks?

Thanks for updating the tool list, at the beginning of this thread, and who is bringing what.

I would also encourage everyone to keep track of their tools and if you use someone else's tools, put them back as soon as you are done with them.
None of us want to lose or gain tools next weekend, except in the swap meet.

If there is a need I can bring a large air hammer/chisel as well as a "cordless" chisel for busting rivets and the like. We've used them in the past, any use this time?

I'll bring a hand impact driver and full set of bits including clutch head, good for stubborn door hinge screws and similar.

I'm already on the list for tube tools.
If you have need of them try to round up ahead of time all the tube nuts and other fittings you may need. If something odd let me know and I'll look up a part number for you (if available) and or look in my stash. To conserve space I'd prefer not to bring my whole collection of fittings and such.

If needed I have the following tools I could bring;

9' tall 8' wide A-Frame (looks like a swing set) with 1/2 ton chain fall...great for lifting engines on vehicles that don't have a hood.

2-ton folding leg cherry picker w/engine leveler.

Tow Truck with 12,000 pound swing out boom.

Mike B -- If it's not too much trouble, we could use the A-Frame and one-ton chain hoist (the chain fall I have is ridiculously overkill for an engine snatch ...) The engine hoist ... There's the one here already, plus Gary is bringing one, so we may be good one those.

FYI, my chain fall is 1/2-ton (1,000 pound) rated...I'll bring the A frame and chain fall down this week.

Grigg, My leveler is a cheap HF box tube type, should be OK, but if you have a nice one with roller bearings it might be better.

Mine is Cornwell but also imported, nothing special.

John, Grigg and I, have been doing some private message's on what tools to bring.
During that chat, it was brought up about how to treat borrowed tools.
John then asked if Grigg and I, would share, what we said during that chat.

Here is Grigg's quote, copied and pasted.

"At our timber framing projects one of the things we discuss at the first morning meeting is tools. Many of the volunteers and instructors make their living with their tools, if you need to borrow something first ask, and if granted permission treat it with the utmost care. When done do not set it down and walk away, do not give or lend it to someone else, DO return it in person.
Some of that discussion could be useful for our crowd. Treating borrowed tools with more care than you would your own, and promptly return them without passing them on to someone else.

Here is my quote.

"When I was working in the machine shops, none of my precision tools were loaned out or even touched by someone else, except inspectors, under my watchful eye, to check their accuracy.
My job and performance, depended on accurate and quality tools.
Hand tools were different, loan them out for short uses and made sure they were in the same shape as when loaned out.
If for some reason I had to borrow a tool, it would be oiled, cleaned and handed back ASAP.
Then I would start looking to buy my own. I hate borrowing things.
This may make a good short discussion, but I think everyone that will be wrenching, already know that.

Note: Our Snap-On rep will be on site with his truck Saturday morning, so if you were ever needing anything, this would be a good time. He's a great American and a Stovebolter at heart.

I'll have a tap and die set , compression tester , and a tach & dwell meter to bring along also if needed.

Cool -- All handy! I hope to install the adapter plate for the old style water pump on my 261 so that T&D set will get used

I wonder if we'll have anyone on hand who knows what to do with it, though ???

Already have a nice tap and die set loaded on truck.
Also die nuts, I'll explain the difference at HQ.
Dial calipers and other assorted machinist tools.
I hope to be loaded later today and will update the list tonight.

I just did mine recently, you can have a good look at it.

I also did one recently.
It'd be handy to have the drill size that just fits the hole to first spot the hole before switching to the tap drill. I forget what that size (about 3/8" or a tad larger) but if someone can measure exactly I could bring a few drills if needed.
