One reads from the inside and the other from the outside. Once they started using curved glass I believe Tim is right, readable from the outside. This is what I have so far. On the windshield has The word Plate ,on the vent glass and on center rear has the word Sheet, I don't have any old glass for the Doors. Both of mine are PPG Glass and I know one of them had be replaced. I'm thing they would of been the sheet glass. So, they did not have to think which side faced which way, they just installed it.
I am not near my Suburban, but I have the E-Z-Eye (an L-O-F brand) markings and they are supposedly the original orientation.

Plate was made of two pieces of 1/8", Sheet had one 1/8" and one 1/16". The glass had the lamination in between. This is where the problem with new door glasses dragging in the run channels comes from, Safety Sheet is a thing of the past. Your curved quarter glasses are tempered, hence "Solid" (not laminated). I'd forgot about the different lamination thickness, but as soon as I read it, it came back. .015" isn't much, but cutting the lamination on sheet on a cold day was sure easier than .030!
