These are the ignition keys for my '48 Chevy 1/2 ton.

Note that they have the same # stamped on them, yet the actual key blanks are different. Can someone "in-the-know" explain this? Seems a bit odd to me. Thanks.

I imagine both are aftermarket keys. Your original probably had Briggs and Stratton on it but the one shown doesn't have enough wear for a 68 year old key. The GM marked on is currently available.

One should be the door key, the other the ignition key. Same number for the same truck.

How would anyone know if it is an ignition key, a door lock key, or a glove box lock key?

Wouldn't they all be the same pattern, if made for matching locks? Weren't the original locks matching (same keys)?

These ignition keys have the same cut pattern, yet the blanks are different. I find it quirky that I have two different blanks for my ignition; would have thought that the key blanks would be the same.

I just received key blanks for my '51 and the groves are on the opposite side of the key. The key I have for my ignition has the groves on the right side. Just my luck.

There is a good possibility that one key or the other key or both keys are not the original keys that originally came with the truck?

Both ignition keys work, and that is all that really matters. I am just fussing over something that is rather trivial.

The B10 & B11 blanks were used back then. The hex head B10 was used for the ignition & doors. The round head B11 was used as the trunk & glove box key on cars. I don't know if the B11 was used on the trucks. B10 & B11 blanks.

Trucks only used the B10. All locks were keyed the same. Ref: Factory assembly manual.

On my 58 key it is what I call a pear shape briggs and Stratton number 8074 stamped just below the key ring hole. It operates the ignition and both doors. My glove box has no key slot.

I seem to recall from my days of making keys (40+ years ago) that there were several Briggs & Stratton key blanks that had roughly the same grooves cut in them. If we were out of the correct (according to the book) blank we would just grab a different but compatible blank and cut the key. Customer didn't care just as long as the key worked. A little polishing with the wire wheel or a slight grind here or there with the cutter and all was well.

I was wondering where you can get key blanks. I just brought home a 55 first series C3100 and only got one set of keys. Everywhere I went ( hardware stores, Big Box) - they all said they do not have a blank, and don't think they can get one -

Anyplace you can recommend to get a blank would be appreciated

I found lots of blanks on Evil Bay, but now, is there any guide as to which blanks I need other than visually trying to match my actual key with an image?- it is a 1955 First series C3100 1/2 ton

Find the oldest lock smith in your area and see if they have the blanks collecting dust...

Joe, our resident key man Cletis will chime in soon with the blank # you need. I don't remember myself. Mike B has a good suggestion. Reread post a few back, seems like trucks used B10 blanks.

Yes, a B10 blank is what you need. And you should not have any trouble finding them locally. Are you sure you have an original ignition switch?

1933 - 1966 used that blank for ignition. The b-11 is for trunks, etc.

How would I check for original switch on this truck?
