I had a post running in General on what color to paint my dash. Maybe you saw it. I finally pulled out of the pile my old dash and put some rubbing compound to it to take a look at the original color which if Biege "Hammered". After looking this over the Hammered must mean the fish eyed appearance that the paint has.
Anyone out there know how to get that hammered effect? Is there a special product, procedure, method to do this. Or is this something that they did way back when in the factory, and we just can't duplicate it now.
Any help out there? comments?

You can get the paint in rattle cans at both Ace Hardware or any major hardware store. It's also available by the qt. from Jim Carter. The only thing is the color selection is not all that large. Cecil........

51Jimmy, Do you know if the stuff from Jim Carter has that effect? I saw he has beige but didn't know if it was Hammered.
Thanks for the reply.

FYI... I talked with the good folks at Jim Carter and the paint that they sell is just a spray on and the "Hammer" effect takes shape.
Sounds to easy. I may try it.

No, the only one JC has is the color for the heater. The more I think about it, a automotive paint shop is probably your best bet. Could take the part over and have some of the people take a look at it and get better idea of where you go from here. Like the job you've done on your frame and brakes so far, it looks like your doing a A1 job. Cecil.......

I use the hammer type finish on early series AD radios. I bought mine at a local automotive/general supply house. the result varies with your technique. Some times flowing it on gives a good pronounced hammer affect. If you go over it again, sometimes it will look almost like regular paint. Probably practice is the best bet to success here.

I bought a quart from JC and they advertize it as the original hammered interior color for the '40. I will try it and let you all know.
The Kilz hammerite product looks a little more like cottage cheeze then the original fish eye/marblely look.
Thanks for the tip on the heater. I hadn't thought that far ahead yet but I think it also has the hammered look.
This is just one big learning experience!!!

that Hammerite is tough to apply - dries instantly so ya hafta be real careful using a brush to avoid 'drag' - looked good for my 46 interior tho'

I used Plasti-kote spray bombs of silver "Hammer Finish" on some of the interior of my 58, and it looks great - works well as replacement for the original on the heater cover

For smaller parts, you can get a hammer-finish powder coating.

I used hammer finish paint on my dining set.
It seemed like I had to putt it on thick to get it to "Hammer"
Almost to the point of drips.

Ya got any pictures posted anywhere of how the 58 interior turned out using the hammer finish from the rattle cans?

Do you use a primer? I bought a quart from JC and wasn't able to find out if it needs a primer or what type to use. I sandblasted my heater, so it will be clean when I spray it, but logic tells me I should prime it. Any body have a thought?

Bob - only shot of the 58 inside on hand - looks better than this pic, but haven't done the whole thing yet, will maybe do more this summer - here\'s a poor shot of the deluxe heater I'm workin on for the current 57 panel, and here\'s a shot of the 57 frankentruck\'s cab w/ a darker plain gray dash top and door panel insert - gets lotsa compliments! grin

Jake - I used spray bomb primer on somea the things, not on others - inside it's not as important as when exposed to the elements - some things on the 57 got primered at the next door body shop when apart getting tin bashed - I drive these trucks, so not looking for show quality, just something that'll make'em last and be 'presentable' - I do 'resurrections' not restorations grin the important part on a heater is actually the inside which is where they corrode first due to condensation and leaks, and I've used the zinc based weld-thru spray bombs for that

Kevin - "Hammerite" is a pretty good product in rattle cans that will give you the effect you're looking for. It requires no primer and will encapsulate rust. Just wire brush and clean the loose stuff the best you can. You'll have to practice spraying it. Usually just 1 or 2 passes.
