I own a '51 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup and am learning restoration as I go along. My '51 is geared very low and has trouble getting up any speed on the highway. What can I do to improve this? One person suggested changing rear ends. He said change the pumpkin. To me a pumpkin is something to make pies out of. Can someone set me staight? What I have always called the pumkin is the cast iron center of the rear end that the two axle tubes come out of. but some people and I'm guessing this guy means the differential inside the rear end.the easiest way is to just swap out the entire rear end with a good one having the gearing you want. if you want your original rear end then its a gear swap.hope it helps | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | Switch your pumpkin for a cantaloupe and you will be good to go.

It sure seems to be a lotta trouble to end up with 4.11 while the half tonners have 4.11 and their trucks still only go 50mph. My 54 has 3.90 and I can't wait to upgrade to 3.55. It seems to me that if you go through all that much work you should at least get into the 3.73 range. This would require getting a donor rear end and some welding is involved.
