I modified the original radiator support (measure/cut/weld/remeasure/re-cut/re-weld) to allow me to lower the radiator. My issue was more related to making clearance for the fan blade and auto-transmission/radiator coolant lines, but also put the fan in the right place.

Electric fans have come a long way and today is on most all cars. With the reliability proven on them I'd recommend going to a junk yard and finding one that will work on your truck.
....but, to save gas, time, and a few 4 letter words, buy a GOOD electric fan with the temp control to kick it on and off and you'll never be sorry.
