I've replaced the cable, and checked it first. No problem there. I have another head, and the question is...how tough is it to rebuild the head, or should I just bite the bullet and buy new? I'd rather spend the money on something else that the truck is needing. Thanks for the help and hope everyone has a great Christmas.

Take your drill and chuck the tranny end in it then slowly spin it til you determine which way you need to spin it. Then spin it up to see if it works. If not find a short piece of the inner cable and put it in the back of the head and use the drill again. If it now works you have a bad cable or it is not staying pushed far enough into the head. I would think the head going bad would be fairly rare. Good luck.

| | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 45 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 45 | I agree with the above - if someone replaced the cable somewhere along the line, could be it is too short at the head, and not spinning the speedometer. There should be a collar on the top so that the cable goes far enough into the head. Some of the universal replacements may not have that. Otherwise, the heads are not too bad to work with - below is a good link - I used this to take mine apart and lubricate it. I also found out how to adjust the "clock spring" as I accidentally moved it - 1000 rpm is about 60 mph. Spin it with a drill and adjust accordingly. I fine tuned in the truck with GPS. Would work, then not, readings erratic. Turned out to be a worn out cable. First thing I would check would be the cable for proper length and engagement at trans. & head. Also, watch for kinks or tight bends.
I also pulled apart the head to check gears, lubricate, and install new decals on face and odometer wheels. Not a hard job. Just make sure you get things back in the original positions. | | |
