Any tips on how to install the new one? seems I remember having to work thru the headlight holes. trying to avoid this. Any help appreciated.

You need to loosen a lot of other nearby fasteners to be able to shoehorn the grill in without scratching the paint.
As far as access, you need as much as you can find, including through the headlight holes.
