| | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | Anyone have a case of torque converter ballooning?My engine started making noise on start up for about 30 seconds when it was cold.We put a dial indicator on the crank and it had .025 forward to rear movement after removing the pan we pulled the thrust bearing cap and found the rear side of the bearing was worn. Engine only has 400 to 500 miles on it.I've never heard of this but looking around the internet I've been reading that it is a problem.I got the torque converter from the same place that rebuilt my trans 727 mopar.

I was pulling a trailer a lot and not cutting it any slack. The 440 would pull hard and the converter wasn't made for that much torque. Lucky I seen the crank movement before the converter came apart. This was also a 727.
My race car explode a converter from ballooning. It made a real mess of the transmission. This was back before the anti-ballon plates were not being used regularly. This one was a switch-pitch converter ( T400 trans ) and it didn't like the torque when locked up.
