Hi guys...just spent most of the evening trying to get a Newport Wiper conversion set up in my 1953 Chevy truck. I ordered the one that was able to clear the choke cable and everything was marked for that and don't you know...it hit the choke cable....hit the heater duct...and also hit the steering column support....I am hoping jim carter truck takes it back because it must have gotten tagged wrong from the factory...anybody else bought this wiper conversion and had them send the wrong one?....

so frustrating these old truck....don't know how you guys can keep working on them and even collect more than one of them...to me at this point....it has not been a fun trip....we are on the homestretch...about $2000.00 more and we should be done...if the motor is is sick well then....someone else can deal with that issue...

Thanks for listening

Mike, sorry your having problems. I got mine from JCarter to an it works very well and needed zero adjustment once I put it in my 52panel.
If my memory serves me correctly the number is 4753CC. It has to have the CC on the number to be the one that avoids the choke. My experience with Carters has by far been good so give them a call.
....and don't give up. Overcome the obstacles one at a time. Sort of like eating that big elephant one bite at a time.
....if the engine is bad, fix it or replace it. You can't let the truck win. If so, I'd gave up on the 37, or the 52 about 3 years into the each build. The self esteem, the pride you get in doing it will make you forget the long road. I, like many others, have been there. Those who succeed go the mile....and "one more step". You can do it.

Mike,

Take Alvin's advice and call JC. My experiences with JC's has always been excellent. You might have to pay return shipping, but if you ordered the correct part number and they sent you the wrong part, they should send you the correct part and they should pay shipping.

Let us know how this proceeds (how it works out, we hope).

I have not had any problems with Jim Carter truck parts....they actually have been my exclusive supplier for this rebuild....hoping the part was mis-numbered and I got the opposite of what I ordered....it interfered with everything under the dash....

just wanna get this thing running and moving before the weather gets crazy around here...

Hi Stovebolters....

Still nothing resolved with the wiper conversion...here is photo of how the wiper motor "clears" the choke cable..

shown here.....

another view here

So I was on the phone with Jim Carter truck parts...boy those guys are great...he even sent me a photo (below) of what he sent me and this wiper conversion is the one the vendor told him would fit under the dash of a 1953 Chevy truck...

in the box before the install

I was also in touch with the folks at Newport...they wanted a picture so I sent all three shown here...

something isn't right here....to me a clearance fit on a part is you have space between things for air to pass...not so with this...choke cable hits and doesn't even work...I did have a brain fart and I unhooked the choke cable...took it off the truck and physically bent the mounting point on the dash so the cable would clear...it looks stupid as heck when it is pulled out from the dash as it is bent at about a 5 degree angle...I rerouted it around the other side of the fresh air vent to ease in the operation of the cable...

this is a head scratcher for sure...

Anybody see what is wrong in those pictures???

Looks like two different style motors. The one JC Trucks sent you versus the photo of the one in the box? From the photos, they don't even look the same?

Hard to tell from your pics but your motor may be installed on the wrong side of the bracket?

HI Dads

Yuppers that is exactly what I have in my 1953 Chevy truck...not sure what is going on with mine...I did get it to work by bending the mounting flange on the dash board so it slanted the stiff part of the choke cable. Jim Carter has offered to take it back and exchange it for another. Not sure what to do...kinda half waiting to see what Newport is going to say...

Every time I think I got stuff figured out somebody throws a curve ball at me.....I am trying to not scrimp on this rebuild so when I go to sell it I can list all the "high-end" parts I put in it....

Hmmmm......frustrating to say the least....

Hey Dads50

Should I be having to bend stuff to make this stuff fit?....I thought when I bought this kit it was a direct bolt in...the only thing that fit was the extra support bracket for the bottom of the wiper assembly...

Thanks for the pictures...wish mine would clear like yours....my truck came out of the Kansas city plant...I wonder if they placed the choke cable in a different spot on the dash board????...where did your truck originally come from???

Hi Dads550

Wow love the pictures...I definitely have what we used to call back in my machine design days as an interference fit...I sent the old one that they sent me back in the US mail 2 day arrival back to Jim Carter truck parts...the folks at Newport told me to rotate the choke cable so it would clear the gear box on the wiper assembly. I am not sure what to think...I don't trust what anybody says anymore....so I am hoping the next wiper conversion that I get from Jim Carter will work out for me...I don't wanna go back to vacuum if I can help it...I had them on a 1960 Willys truck and they were a joke to say the least...Hoping by next week to have this thing straighten out....the money tree has not died yet so I will keep ordering other parts that I need...I wanna back this thing out of the garage before the first of the year...I gotta mini-stock waiting to come in to do some stuff on on it this winter...

Thanks for all the help...I will keep posting until this is resolved...

This is coolest thing yet...I talk to the folks at Jim Carter truck parts...they assure me they will send me another new one...2 weeks goes by and nothing...get a call from the RMA guy there...he tells me everything he has is the same stuff that I had already bought...he is going to credit my account and we will be done with it....I call him back...I talk to him directly and told him just ship it back on my dime and I will figure it how as to how to get it to fit...
So I look at my credit card statement this morning...he charged me again for the same part I already bought in November...so now that $195 New Port wiper conversion is costing me $390.00...not bad huh???...I basically payed for it twice...

Gotta love it....

Anybody wanna buy this old truck when I done with it???...I am so sick of it...

I purchaed mine from classic parts (newport brand)

It was the wrong one that did not clear the choke cable. At that time classic parts did not specify that in the listing.

I then called newport directly.
Even though I did not purchase it from newport he told me to ship it to him and he would convert it. I just had a pay a small bench fee.

Newport stepped up.

Looks like classic and JC is not the place ot order a e wiper.

Has anyone ordered the wiper kits straight from Newport, that looks like an option on their website now?

I generally prefer buying stuff from the people that make it where possible, then if any questions or problems there's only one person to talk to and they ought to have the best answers. Often but not always is cheaper than using a middle man/distributor.

A couple years ago at a truck show Newport was setup in the swap meet with a nice display of various old truck cowls and windshields with their wipers installed, they were nice to talk to and helpful. The next day I went back with cash in hand to buy a set for my 48 truck... except they wouldn't sell them to me, I had to go through a distributor.
That was frustrating at the time, I just couldn't understand displaying your product at an antique truck show swap meet and not actually selling the product. Decided I don't need to deal with them at all and opted for a different sort of wiper conversion, purchased one but as of yet not installed and untested.

It is probably more difficult to install but it allows lots of flexibility on where you mount the motor, having purchased and looked at one it seems to be a good quality system.
