I must have knocked the timing out as the motor now pings. I found there is no timing tab on the front of the motor. What do I do to re-set the timing to eliminate the pinging?

Nonetheless, the timing mark/needle can be viewed on the the forward face of the clutch housing above the starter. You could also just loosen and rotate the distributer in either/both directions, little by little until the ping disappears..
