Does anyone have some tips on how to do this so it looks presentable? It is chrome and probably should be sanded and primed first. I know I could just buy the decals... but I just don't like them. A stencil would handy. Steve

I saw an episode of Power Block TV where Jimmy used a Duplicolor Paint cartridge scratch remover touch-up system to do exactly that. Its like a Pen for paint that you can control. I would think that episode is available, but I haven't been able to find it. It looked to me like the PERFECT thing for the hood emblem, hubcaps, etc, etc.

You could buy the decal, remove the letters and use whats left as a stencil. Its sticky. You may have to cut it to fit the emblem.

I bought the decals, and although I wondered if they could be any good or decent looking, I have to say I'm pretty happy with them! They look good, were easy to apply and were cheap. If you try them and don't like them ,just take them off and then paint them. Have you ever tried them? If not, how can you know you won't like them?

Well, you make a good point. They certainly don't cost very much. Thanks, Steve

Here is a very good shot of a NOS piece should you try paint. I paint all of my parts like this with spray enamel, usually good quality model paint (Testors) or Rust Oleum. First, I mask as well as I possiblly can, for some difficult areas I coat them with Vaseline, things like inside portions of numbers/letters. I then spray the color and within 10-minutes I remove the masking tape (3M Blue) and the Vaseline with a Q-tip. Then I use Bamboo skewers (they come in a bundle, most grocery stores), these have a very sharp point which I then use to remove the tacky enamel along tape lines. Is it time consuming, yes, but I have used this to make nice finishes on gas pumps, Coke machines, and my truck parts.

Deve/53Moving on-

Use Brad Allen's technique described above. I am not familiar with "Jimmy", but his touch-up paint job with those pens is probably flaking by now, or at least that has been my experience.

Hey Brad, this looks like a easy enough technique. Did you sand or steel wool and prime first? Steve

The original had lost almost all of it's paint over its
60 years of service.

The original piece was not sanded, blasted or scuffed up
in any way before painting at the factory.
I just used patience, a fine brush and One-Shot paints after
cleaning good with a solvent which doesn't leave any residue.

Here it is today, six years and 10,000 miles later.

If needed I will rough up the surface for prep. On Coke macines I have done a couple letters a day of the raised letters and Coca Cola script so I don't mask over drying enamel. If the surface is already painted or clean I just mask and shoot. Like i said it can be time consuming but most good applications of paint are anyway.
