The 235 is at the machine shop, the '54 motor had already been bored out so we chose to go with the '60 block and use the 848 head from the '54.

The question is: Should we use the original '54 oil pump, pickup and pan (machine shop would have to drill and tap a hole in Main Cap #4 for the older pump) or am I better off finding a pump, pickup and pan from a '60 engine? I'm assuming we can't use the '54 pan with the newer-style oil pump/pickup, I might be wrong, usually am. smile

54 pump and pan are unique to a 54 block. You should use the 58 to 60 parts

Even the oil pan is different. Go with 58-62 235 parts and you should be alright.

Up to 1954 the pan rails are straight down both sides. Starting in 1955(late 55 on trucks) the pass side bulges out, so they are not interchangeable.
1955-62 pans will all fit, but make sure you get the matching oil pump pick-up for the pan.
BTW, the 1954 pump will not work with the 1955-62 pick-ups.

Great, thanks guys! I'm looking at LMC for the pan etc, any other good sites for that specific stuff? I may throw it up on the "Parts Wanted" section and see what happens.

EDIT: No dice on LMC - only pans I find are for 58-59 283 engines.

Try Ebay. I've seen at least 4 pans. Chevy 235-261 engine parts search.

RodTheWrench, there is a chance JimCarter may be able to help. The last time I was there the basement had lots of used parts and the back yard was full of metal to. Its worth the call to them and find out....or maybe even they may give you a lead???

I just counted six 235 oil pans on Ebay a few minutes ago. Doesn't anybody else start looking there?

Then again, helping out a real Stovebolt contributor who peruses the Parts Wanted section before going to Ebay, is what a good Bolter does. Rod found exactly what he was looking for here. I too have found more respect for the WANTED and FOR SALE sections here. It's wonderful to help out those who bother to post here first.

Bargains are great. I look for them everywhere. Doing a solid for another Bolter is priceless.
