Is there nany way to identify if a stock 6cyl is a 216.5 or 235?mine has stamped on it on the top rim of the block 383716 GM6. I can not find any other numbers.

Here are locations of various 216/235 casting codes.

head casting code
head date casting code

block casting code
block date casting code

Engine Serial Number

All those codes should allow you/us to ID the size and date.

A quick easy way is to look at the engine side covers to distinguish 216 or 235.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

You have a 3100 1953, the only engine from GM that year on a 3100 was a 216.5
