It is not uncommon to find all sorts of things welded or bolted to these trucks. Take a close look and determine what it is. A good grinder or cut off wheel can slice through the welds so you can get it apart. Let us know what you find. It'd be nice to check out the online manuals and review the assembly manual. Im not sure about removing in sections either but I have a 55.1 and can inspect mine and see if it is the same as yours. Maybe that will give you a good idea where to start.

I guess I will just slide the sides off with the rear sill. And yes sill is the correct term. Thanks for taking the time, now I can proceed without thinking I missed removing a bolt some where. I have a lot of rust removal to do, it would have been easier if it separated.....Thanks again big help

That allows you to paint the parts before assembly and eliminate a spot where rust will form at the welds. Unless you plan to do some heavy hauling the bed side will not be likely to move. To make it even more secure you can bolt it exactly where you want it then drill the bolt holes one at a time for a 3/8 bolt instead of 5/16.
