The valves were noisy so after fully warming it up I pulled off the valve cover and laid some card board in its place to keep oil from spilling out. I then started up motor and starting from front to back loosening tappets one at a time until I heard the loud clicking then I tightened it down until noise stopped. I then went a additional 1/4 turn tighter and moved onto next one. Well the motor was quiet and ran good. I now have an original 50 216 chevrolet. Any thoughts on the above procedure for this motor? That is the correct procedure for adjusting the valves. The 216 & manual trans. models had solid lifters. You have to adjust the valves on these with a feeler gauge to the specified clearance. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. If you mark the flywheel for 1/6, 2/5, 3/4 it is even easier. For 1/6 for example, when they are both at the top of their travel, one set of lifters will rock back and forth when you move it off center less than 20 degrees. The other set will just sit there and not move. Thats because that set of lifters is at the back of the cam lobe and the one that's rocking is at the top of the lobe. You want to adjust the one that's NOT rocking. Then you can move 120 degrees and do the next set. It took me about 20 minutes to do my engine today.
