Hi All,

Been watching/reading stovebolt.com for a while now, but I can officially be a member now that I just inherited a 1949 1433 (Canadian 1-Ton) Dump Truck. After trailering it home I've only just started documenting what it has and trying to figure out what I'm going to do with it. It's not running now, but I know it was used about 5-6 years ago so it shouldn't be in too bad of shape.

I did figure out today that it has a later 261 installed in it, and it appears as though it may have been converted to 12-Volts at some point.

Welcome to the Stovebolt. I think you CAN post pictures but not sure. Your moderated for 4 post and after that you can enjoy all the Stovebolt benefits! Remember to ask questions in the best, or most correct forum for the best results.

....not sure what year the 261 came out, maybe 55 or 56. Chevy was 12 volt then so perhaps whoever changed the engine also took care of the 6 to 12 volt stuff.

Welcome to the site. Seeing as you are Canadian, the 261 could be a car engine. They were available in the Canadian Pontiacs and were quite common. The castings numbers will tell you.

Yes, you should be able to post pictures already, you have to link them to a hosting site. I would like to see them as well.

The casting number is 3769717. One resource tells me it's a 1959-1962 261, but I didn't find too much else.

I pulled a taillight bulb and it's a 12V 1157, and there's a huge resistor hanging off the heater control knob so I think the conversion is done. It still has a generator though.

Post those numbers in the Engine Forum and someone will tell you for sure exactly what you have. There is also a Vin Buster in the tech tips. Gosh, just so much info here it takes a little time to get acquainted with all of it..... and you might want to introduce yourself, and show pictures in the Big Bolt Forum. Guys there know a lot about big trucks.
Not everyone that signs in comes through the welcome center everytime and may not see the info you posted.

Your right on track, 19491438. I have a 261 myself from a '56 big truck but its going in a 50 coupe. The 261 only came in the big trucks around 55/56 but not sure about other years. I think they came in 2 ton trucks....but the guys in Big Bolt will know for sure. Nice to have you aboard. Enjoy the trip/journey.

I am working my way through 1 ton (former dump truck) born in the Kansas city plant in Dec 1952. I see some similarities as well as some differences too in your truck...
