| | | | Joined: Sep 2014 Posts: 77 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2014 Posts: 77 | I have a 1950 5 window with the 4 speed transmission which has been totally restored by a local shop. The truck has yet to be started as I am doing a restoration.
I have filled it to the proper level with gear lub.
Just from sitting on stands it has developed a oil leak from the drivers side of box.
Do the side cover bolts use seals or should bolt threads
Have sealant. It appears leak is from there.
Any ideas are appreciated.

There is a gasket on the drivers side of the SM420 4 speed transmission, with if I remember correctly 6 bolts. The gasket needs sealant on it. I use Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket on the paper gasket and #2 Permatex Form-A Gasket o the bolts. that should stop your leak. You might just want to check to make sure the bolts are tight...1/4 turn until tight. Don't distort the plate.
